The Festival of Lights
Aarav and Maya join their parents in preparing for Diwali by creating a colorful Rangoli and baking traditional sweets. Through the story of Prince Rama, they learn that the true meaning of the Festival of Lights is the victory of kindness and light over darkness.

The sun rose over the little house on Willow Lane, but today wasn't just any ordinary morning. It was the first day of Diwali! Aarav and his younger sister, Maya, woke up to the sweet, intoxicating smell of cardamom and rosewater drifting from the kitchen. It was a scent that only filled their home once a year, signaling that the most wonderful celebration had finally arrived. "Wake up, Maya!" Aarav whispered, gently shaking his sister's shoulder. "The sun is up, and Mama is already in the kitchen. It’s the Festival of Lights!" Maya sat up, her eyes wide with excitement. They both scrambled out of bed, their feet pattering against the wooden floor. In the hallway, they found their parents already busy. The house had been cleaned from top to bottom over the last week, every corner scrubbed until it sparkled. Mama explained that they were making their home ready to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and good fortune. "First things first," Mama said, handing them small bags of brightly colored powders—vibrant oranges, deep fuchsias, and sunny yellows. "We must create the Rangoli. It is our way of welcoming guests and joy into our home." They spent the next hour crouching on the front porch. Aarav carefully outlined a large lotus flower using white chalk, and then the fun began. Maya was in charge of the petals, carefully pouring the pink powder to fill the shapes. Aarav added intricate swirls of blue and green around the edges. It wasn't perfectly symmetrical, and Maya accidentally sneezed once, sending a little puff of yellow sand onto the porch, but Mama just laughed. "It’s beautiful because you made it together," she said. By midday, the kitchen had become a laboratory of sweetness. Papa was at the stove, stirring a thick, golden mixture of roasted gram flour and ghee. He was making Besan Ladoo, Aarav’s favorite. "Why do we make so many sweets, Papa?" Maya asked, her nose twitching at the delicious aroma.
