Synopsis
A young boy named Mateo believes sleep is a waste of time and prefers to stay awake and explore the night. He learns from an old cricket that sleep and dreams are also valuable and help him grow in unexpected ways.
Había una vez, en un barrio lleno de casas de colores y faroles que cantaban canciones de luz, un nene llamado Mateo. Mateo no quería dormir. No es que le tuviera miedo a la oscuridad, ni que soñara con monstruos debajo de la cama. No, Mateo simplemente creía que dormir era una pérdida de tiempo monumental. ¡Hay tantas cosas por ver y por hacer!, exclamaba, con sus ojos brillantes como dos luciérnagas atrapadas en un frasco.
Cada noche, cuando su mamá, Elena, le daba el beso de buenas noches y apagaba la luz, Mateo esperaba pacientemente unos minutos. Luego, sigilosamente, se levantaba. A veces, construía ciudades de almohadas que llegaban hasta la luna de papel pegada en su techo. Otras, leía cuentos a sus peluches, inventando finales aún más emocionantes que los originales. Una noche, incluso intentó pintar las estrellas en el techo con témpera fluorescente (Elena no se puso muy contenta con eso).
Una noche, mientras exploraba el jardín a la luz de la luna, encontró un grillo anciano, sentado en una hoja de lechuga. El grillo, al verlo, lo saludó con un chirrido suave. ¿Qué haces despierto a estas horas, pequeño?, preguntó el grillo. Mateo, orgulloso, le explicó su filosofía: Dormir es aburrido. Me pierdo de la noche, de las estrellas, de todo lo que pasa mientras todos roncan.
El grillo sonrió, mostrando sus pocos dientes. Pero, muchacho, la noche también necesita descansar. Las estrellas necesitan el silencio para brillar, las flores necesitan la oscuridad para guardar sus secretos, y tú... tú necesitas el sueño para soñar.
Mateo frunció el ceño. ¿Soñar? Pero si estoy despierto, ¡puedo hacer mis propios sueños!.
El grillo suspiró. Los sueños que se sueñan despierto son maravillosos, sí. Pero los sueños que se sueñan dormido... esos te dan alas. Te llevan a lugares que ni siquiera imaginas, te enseñan cosas que no podrías aprender de otra forma. Y lo más importante, te ayudan a crecer.
Mateo se quedó pensando en las palabras del grillo. Esa noche, después de despedirse del sabio insecto, regresó a su cama y cerró los ojos. Y por primera vez en mucho tiempo, se dejó llevar por el sueño. Soñó que volaba en un dragón hecho de estrellas, que hablaba con los animales del bosque, y que descubría un tesoro escondido en el jardín de su abuela. Al despertar, sintió una energía nueva, una chispa diferente. Había entendido que la noche no solo era para ver y hacer, sino también para soñar y crecer. Y aunque siguió amando la noche, aprendió a valorarla en su totalidad, incluyendo las horas de descanso. A partir de esa noche, Mateo ya no le robaba horas a la noche, sino que las compartía, disfrutando tanto de la vigilia como del sueño.
