The Great Wings of Greenwillow Farm

Basé sur : A farm where the donkey is a leader and pther animals fight because they want lo fly like a duck, but the cow is so heavy, chick are so young and horse can run

Synopsis

When the animals of Greenwillow Farm try to mimic Dilly the Duck's flight, they face hilarious and heartfelt failures. Barnaby the wise donkey must step in to teach his friends that their unique, ground-based talents are just as valuable as soaring through the air.

Deep in the heart of the rolling hills stood Greenwillow Farm, a place where the grass was always the perfect shade of emerald and the air smelled of sweet clover. While most farms were run by a farmer in overalls, Greenwillow was a little different. Here, the animals looked to Barnaby the Donkey for guidance. Barnaby was a silver-grey donkey with long, velvety ears and a penchant for wearing a small, battered straw hat that sat lopsided on his head. He wasn't the loudest or the fastest, but he was certainly the wisest.

One breezy Tuesday afternoon, peace was disrupted by a shimmering streak of white. Dilly the Duck took off from the pond, her wings whistling as she caught an updraft. She circled the barn twice, performing a graceful loop-de-loop before landing softly on the weather vane. 'The view from up here is magnificent!' Dilly quacked, her feathers preened to perfection. 'You can see the edges of the world! Why stay on the ground when you can touch the clouds?'

Those words sparked a fire of envy in the barnyard. Clarabelle the Cow, who was usually content chewing her cud, looked up with wide, soulful eyes. 'I want to see the edges of the world,' she rumbled. 'I want to feel the wind beneath my... well, my hooves.'

Clarabelle decided then and there that she would fly. She climbed to the top of a large haystack, her heavy tail swishing nervously. The other animals gathered around. 'Don’t do it, Clarabelle!' Barnaby warned gently, trotting over. 'A cow’s magic is in her milk and her steady heart, not in the air.'

But Clarabelle was determined. She let out a mighty 'Moo!' and leaped. For a fraction of a second, she felt weightless. Then, gravity remembered its job. With a thunderous *thud* that shook the chicken coop, Clarabelle landed in a pile of soft mud. She wasn't hurt, but she was very muddy and very embarrassed. 'I’m too heavy,' she sobbed. 'The ground just loves me too much.'

Seeing Clarabelle’s attempt, the three youngest chicks—Pip, Squeak, and Wilfred—decided they could do better. They were small and light, after all. They climbed onto the fence rail and began flapping their tiny, yellow-fuzz wings with all their might. 'Look at us! We’re soaring!' Pip squeaked. But no matter how fast they flapped, they only succeeded in hopping a few inches into the air before tumbling back down into the dust. They started to cry, their tiny cheeps filled with frustration. 'We’re too young! Our wings are just fluff!'

Then came Harrison the Horse. Harrison was a magnificent chestnut stallion who could run faster than the summer wind. He watched Dilly the Duck with a look of intense longing. 'If I run fast enough,' Harrison declared, his mane tossing, 'I will simply run off the edge of the hill and stay in the sky. My speed will be my wings!'

He began to gallop. Around and around the pasture he went, his hooves drumming a rhythmic beat against the earth. He reached the crest of the hill and gave a powerful leap, his legs tucked beneath him. For a moment, he looked like a statue carved from bronze against the blue sky. But, like Clarabelle, Harrison returned to the earth with a heavy jolt. He stood panting, his head hung low. 'I can run across the world,' he sighed, 'but I cannot leave it.'

An argument broke out. The animals began to bicker and snap. The chicks blamed the wind, Clarabelle blamed her breakfast, and Harrison blamed the hill. The farm was no longer a place of peace; it was a place of disgruntled dreamers. Barnaby stood in the center of the yard and let out a loud, resonant bray. 'Hee-haw! Silence!'

The animals stopped mid-shout. Barnaby walked slowly toward the pond where Dilly was still perched, looking a bit guilty for causing such a stir.

'Friends,' Barnaby said, his voice calm and steady. 'Dilly flies because she is a duck. Her bones are light as dry leaves, and her spirit belongs to the breeze. But look at you, Clarabelle. You are the foundation of this farm. Your strength keeps the grass trimmed and your kindness warms the barn. If you were in the sky, who would we lean on? And you, little ones,' he said, nudging the chicks with his soft nose. 'Your job is to grow and to fill the morning with song. You aren't too young; you are exactly who you need to be right now.'

Barnaby turned to Harrison. 'Harrison, you are the heartbeat of the meadows. When you run, we feel the power of the earth itself. The sky doesn't need you, Harrison, because the ground is honored to have you.'

The animals looked at one another. Clarabelle wiped the mud from her nose and realized that she did quite like the feeling of the solid earth beneath her feet. The chicks stopped crying and started chasing a butterfly, happy to be small and quick. Harrison shook his mane and gave a playful whinny, realizing that his speed was a gift that didn't need to lead to flight.

'We all have our own way of soaring,' Barnaby concluded, adjusting his straw hat. 'Some fly with wings, some with their hearts, and some with their hooves.'

From that day on, the animals of Greenwillow Farm watched Dilly the Duck fly with admiration instead of envy. They realized that while the sky was vast and beautiful, the view from the ground, surrounded by friends, was even better.
