Sick with the flu, Eliza turns to her late grandmothers home remedies for comfort and healing, finding solace in the familiar routines and memories.
Eliza groaned, pulling the patchwork quilt tighter around her. A scratchy throat, a pounding head, and a nose that felt like a leaky faucet – the dreaded autumn flu had finally caught her. She’d tried to ignore it, fueled by copious amounts of coffee and sheer willpower, but today, willpower had officially surrendered. She stumbled to the kitchen, the world tilting slightly with each step. Her grandmother, Nana Rose, would have known exactly what to do. Nana Rose, the queen of home remedies, the champion of chicken soup, the wielder of wisdom passed down through generations. Eliza missed her terribly. Taking a deep breath, Eliza rummaged through the pantry. First, the honey. Nana Rose always swore by local honey for a sore throat. She added a pinch of salt, a dash of pepper, and a handful of dried parsley, trying to channel Nana Roses culinary spirit. As she ate, Eliza remembered Nana Rose telling her stories of growing up on a farm, using herbs and natural remedies to heal everything from bee stings to broken hearts. She’d scoffed back then, preferring the convenience of modern medicine. But now, wrapped in her quilt, sipping her homemade potion, Eliza felt a connection to her grandmother, a sense of comfort and healing that no pill could provide. She finished the soup and retreated to the couch, pulling the quilt up to her chin. She brewed a chamomile tea – another Nana Rose staple – and settled in to watch a mindless movie. The warmth of the tea, the soothing effects of the chamomile, and the memory of her grandmothers loving care slowly lulled her to sleep. When she woke up a few hours later, she still felt sick, but she also felt…better. A little stronger, a little more hopeful. Maybe, just maybe, Nana Roses cure-all was working after all.
