All Kinds of Families
Leo struggles to draw his family for a school project until he realizes that every home on Oak Street is unique. Through observing his neighbors, he learns that while families come in all shapes and sizes, they are all held together by the same beautiful bond of love.

Oak Street was the kind of place where the sidewalk squares were perfect for hopscotch and the ancient maple trees turned a brilliant, fiery orange every autumn. It was a street filled with the sounds of life: the rhythmic skip-skip-skip of a jump rope, the distant hum of a lawnmower, and the evening call of parents summoning their children home for dinner. Leo lived at number 12, a small yellow house with a porch swing that creaked musically in the wind. One Tuesday afternoon, Leo sat on that porch swing with a giant sketchbook balanced on his knees. His teacher, Ms. Maple, had given the class a very special assignment. “I want you to draw the heart of your home,” she had said. “Draw your family.” Leo chewed on the end of his yellow pencil. He looked through his front door. Inside, his Dad was whistling while he folded laundry, and their old tabby cat, Barnaby, was napping in a patch of sunlight. For Leo, family meant quiet Saturday mornings, shared library books, and the way his Dad always made pancakes in the shape of dinosaurs. It was just the two of them, and to Leo, it felt big enough to fill the whole world. He started to sketch, but then he looked over at number 14. That was where the Millers lived. The Miller house was never quiet. Just then, the front door burst open and a whirlwind of activity spilled out. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were loaded down with bags, followed by their three energetic triplets and an older sister who was practicing her flute as she walked. Their big golden retriever, Buster, was barking at a butterfly. It was loud, chaotic, and wonderfully busy. Leo smiled. The Millers were a big, bustling team, and they always seemed to have room for one more person at their dinner table. Leo looked across the street to number 11, the Chen family’s home. Little Mei was in the front garden with her mother and her grandparents, whom she called Ye-Ye and Nai-Nai. They were carefully planting rows of bright purple snapdragons. Leo watched as Nai-Nai leaned over to show Mei how to pat the soil just right. They spoke in a soft mix of English and Mandarin, their voices drifting across the street like a gentle song. In their house, three generations lived under one roof, sharing stories that stretched across oceans and time.
