Ulises and the Whispering Shadows

Ulises le tiene miedo a los monstruos. Not just the ones in movies, with their gnashing teeth and dripping claws. No, Ulises feared the monsters that lurked in the shadows, the ones that whispered in the wind, the ones he felt crawling under his bed at night. Every creak in the old house, every rustle of leaves outside his window, was a monster sharpening its teeth, preparing to pounce. His room was a fortress of blankets and stuffed animals, a desperate attempt to hold back the encroaching darkness. One particularly stormy night, the wind howled like a banshee, rattling the windows and making the old house groan. Ulises huddled under his covers, tears welling in his eyes. He imagined skeletal fingers reaching for him from under the bed. He squeezed his eyes shut, wishing he could be brave, like his older sister, Lucia. Lucia always laughed at his fears, calling them silly and childish. But Lucia didnt hear the whispers. She didnt feel the cold breath on her neck. Suddenly, a loud BANG echoed through the house. Ulises screamed, burying his face in his pillow. He waited for the monster to burst through his door, but nothing happened. After a few minutes, he cautiously peeked out from under the covers. The door was still closed. He could hear Lucia yelling, "Ulises! Are you okay? It was just a tree branch!" He slowly climbed out of bed, his heart still pounding. Lucia rushed into his room, her face pale but determined. "See? No monsters," she said, pointing to the broken tree branch tapping against his window. "It was just the storm." Ulises looked at the branch, then at Lucia. For the first time, he saw a flicker of fear in her eyes too. Maybe she was scared sometimes, just like him. "But... the whispers," he mumbled. Lucia frowned. "What whispers?" Ulises hesitated. He knew she wouldnt believe him. But then he remembered the fear in her eyes. "Sometimes... I hear whispers. In the shadows." Instead of laughing, Lucia sat down on his bed. "Tell me about them." Ulises explained about the cold breath, the rustling sounds, the feeling of being watched. Lucia listened patiently, without interrupting. When he was finished, she said, "Maybe... maybe the whispers are just the house talking. Its old, you know. It makes a lot of noises." That night, Lucia stayed in Ulisess room. They talked and read stories until the storm passed. Ulises still heard the creaks and rustles, but they didnt seem as scary anymore. He even imagined the house was whispering secrets, not threats. The next day, Ulises and Lucia went outside and cleared the broken branch. As they worked, Ulises realized something. The monsters in the shadows hadnt disappeared. But he didnt feel quite so alone anymore. And maybe, just maybe, that made all the difference.
