Tomás was a happy boy. He liked to play in the park and eat ice cream. But Tomás was also a little worried. He saw trash on the street. He saw plastic bottles in the river. "This is not good," Tomás thought. "I want to help!" One sunny morning, Tomás visited his Abuelo Miguel. Abuelo Miguel had a big garden with lots of flowers and vegetables. Tomás loved to help Abuelo Miguel in the garden. "Abuelo," said Tomás. "I want to help the planet. I want to recycle, but I dont know how." Abuelo Miguel smiled. "Thats a very good idea, Tomás! Recycling is important. It helps to keep our planet clean and healthy." "But how do I do it?" asked Tomás. "It looks complicated!" "Its not complicated at all!" said Abuelo Miguel. "I will show you. First, we need to know what we can recycle." Abuelo Miguel took Tomás to the kitchen. He showed him different containers. "This blue container is for paper and cardboard. Like newspapers, magazines, and cardboard boxes." Tomás looked at the blue container. "Okay, paper and cardboard go in the blue one!" "Good!" said Abuelo Miguel. "This yellow container is for plastic and metal. Like plastic bottles, cans, and aluminum foil." Tomás pointed to a plastic bottle. "So, this bottle goes in the yellow one?" "Exactly!" said Abuelo Miguel. "And this green container is for glass. Like glass bottles and jars." Tomás looked at the green container. "Glass goes in the green one. I understand!" "Very good, Tomás!" said Abuelo Miguel. "But there is one more important thing. Before we recycle something, we need to clean it. For example, if you have a yogurt container, you need to wash it before you put it in the yellow container." "Wash it?" asked Tomás. "Why?" "Because if its dirty, it can contaminate the other things in the container," explained Abuelo Miguel. "And then, it might not be possible to recycle everything." Tomás nodded. "Okay, I will remember to wash things before I recycle them." Abuelo Miguel then took Tomás outside to the garden. He showed him the compost bin. "This is for food scraps and garden waste. Like fruit peels, vegetable scraps, and leaves." "Whats compost?" asked Tomás. "Compost is like a special soil that we can use to help our plants grow," said Abuelo Miguel. "When food scraps and garden waste decompose, they turn into compost. Its like recycling food!" Tomás was very excited. He wanted to start recycling right away. "Can we start now, Abuelo?" "Of course!" said Abuelo Miguel. "Lets start with these newspapers." He pointed to a pile of newspapers on the table. Tomás helped Abuelo Miguel put the newspapers in the blue container. Then, they washed some plastic bottles and put them in the yellow container. They also put some glass jars in the green container. Tomás felt very happy. He was helping the planet! "This is fun, Abuelo!" said Tomás. "I want to recycle everything!" "Thats a great attitude, Tomás!" said Abuelo Miguel. "But remember, we can also reduce the amount of waste we create. For example, we can use reusable bags when we go shopping. And we can drink water from reusable bottles instead of plastic bottles." Tomás thought about this. "Thats a good idea! I can ask Mama to buy reusable bags." From that day on, Tomás became a recycling hero. He recycled everything he could. He also told his friends and family about the importance of recycling. Tomás learned that recycling is not just about putting things in different containers. Its about taking care of our planet. And he was happy to be part of the solution. One day, Tomás and Abuelo Miguel went to the park. They saw a lot of trash on the ground. "Look, Abuelo," said Tomás. "Theres so much trash!" "Yes, its sad," said Abuelo Miguel. "But we can do something about it." Tomás and Abuelo Miguel started to pick up the trash. They separated the recyclable materials from the non-recyclable materials. Other people in the park saw them and started to help. Soon, everyone was cleaning up the park. Tomás felt very proud. He had made a difference. He knew that even small actions can make a big impact. When they finished cleaning, the park looked much better. People could now enjoy the park without seeing so much trash. Tomás smiled. He was a recycling hero, and he was proud of it. He knew that he would continue to recycle and help the planet for the rest of his life. And he knew that his Abuelo Miguel would always be there to support him. That night, Tomás dreamed of a world where everyone recycled and took care of the planet. It was a beautiful dream, and he knew that it could come true if everyone worked together. He fell asleep with a smile on his face, knowing that he was doing his part to make the world a better place.
