Little Red Riding Hood and the Silver-Tongued Wolf

Once upon a time, in a cozy cottage nestled at the edge of the Whispering Woods, lived a bright-eyed girl named Ruby. Everyone called her Little Red Riding Hood because of the magnificent velvet cloak her grandmother had sewn for her. It was the color of autumn berries and felt as soft as a rabbit’s ear. One sunny Tuesday, Ruby’s mother packed a wicker basket with crusty sourdough bread, a jar of golden honey, and three plump apples. 'Grandmother is feeling a bit under the weather,' her mother said, tying the ribbon on the basket. 'Take these to her cabin by the Great Oak. But remember, Ruby: stay on the path, and do not speak to strangers, no matter how polite they seem.' Ruby promised with a giggle and a skip. The Whispering Woods were enchanted. The trees didn’t just grow; they swayed to a melody only the birds could hear. Bluebells chimed like tiny bells when the wind blew, and the squirrels often pointed the way to the best blackberry bushes. Ruby felt perfectly at home. She was halfway through the forest, humming a tune, when a tall, elegant figure stepped from behind a silver birch tree. It wasn’t a scary monster, but a wolf. However, he wasn't like the wolves in the old scary stories. He wore a dapper purple waistcoat with brass buttons and a small, tilted top hat. 'Good morning, fair traveler,' the wolf said, his voice as smooth as melted butter. 'I am Barnaby. And who might you be, walking so vibrantly through my neck of the woods?' Ruby remembered her mother’s warning, but Barnaby looked so charming and spoke so kindly that she didn't want to be rude. 'I’m Ruby,' she said tentatively. 'I’m going to see my grandmother.' 'How noble!' Barnaby exclaimed, bowing low. 'A girl of courage and kindness. But tell me, Ruby, wouldn't your grandmother prefer a bouquet of the Singing Lilies that grow by the babbling brook? They are just a short trot off the path, and their song is said to cure any ailment.' Ruby looked at the path, then at the distant glade where the lilies glowed with a soft, iridescent light. Barnaby’s eyes twinkled—a bit too brightly, Ruby noticed. She also noticed that while his words were sweet, his long, bushy tail was twitching with a nervous, hungry energy. She realized then that Barnaby wasn't just a dapper gentleman; he was a very hungry wolf with a very clever plan.
