Agustin adored his Abuelo Felipe. Abuelo Felipe, with his twinkling eyes and stories that smelled faintly of pipe tobacco and sunshine, was Agustins best friend. Today was a special day: kite-flying day. Abuelo Felipe had spent the previous week carefully crafting a magnificent kite. It was shaped like a vibrant parrot, with a long, flowing tail of rainbow ribbons.
They walked to the breezy hilltop overlooking the village. Abuelo Felipe expertly launched the parrot into the sky. Agustin squealed with delight as it soared higher and higher, dancing on the wind. For a while, they just stood there, silent and content, watching their creation. Then, disaster struck.
A sudden gust of wind, stronger than any before, ripped through the kite. The string snapped, and the parrot, their beautiful parrot, was carried away, a speck of color against the vast blue canvas. Agustins lower lip trembled. Tears welled in his eyes. He looked at Abuelo Felipe, expecting to see disappointment mirrored in his face.
But Abuelo Felipe just smiled. He knelt down beside Agustin and wrapped an arm around him. "Dont be sad, mi nieto," he said, his voice calm. "The kite is free now. Its gone on an adventure. Who knows where it will go? Maybe it will fly over mountains and oceans, bringing joy to others."
Agustin sniffled. "But we made it together!"
"And well make another one," Abuelo Felipe replied, squeezing Agustins shoulder. "This time, maybe well make a kite that looks like a dragon! But more importantly, we made a memory together. A memory that the wind cant take away." He pointed towards the horizon. "Look! See that cloud? It looks just like our parrot, doesnt it?" Agustin looked, and sure enough, a fluffy cloud did resemble the kite. He smiled, a small smile, but a real smile nonetheless.
They walked home hand-in-hand, the wind still whipping around them. Agustin wasnt completely happy, but he wasnt completely sad either. He knew Abuelo Felipe was right. The kite was gone, but the memory of making it, and flying it, would stay with him always. And next week, they would build a dragon.
