Today, she found old man Rodriguez siphoning water from a broken pipe. His eyes pleaded. My granddaughter, shes feverish, he croaked. Marias heart clenched. She knew the fever. It was dehydration. She should report him. The punishment was severe: public shaming and confiscation of water rations.
Instead, Maria looked away. Fix the pipe properly, Rodriguez, she said, her voice rough. And make sure it doesnt leak. He nodded, understanding etched on his face.
