Lily, Mateo, Sofia, and David were best friends. They called themselves the Kindness Club because they always tried to live by Jesus teachings. One sunny afternoon, Mrs. Rodriguez, their favorite neighbor, baked a batch of delicious chocolate chip cookies. She left them cooling on the windowsill while she went to water her garden. But when she came back inside… the cookies were gone!
"Oh dear!" she exclaimed, a little sadly. "Who could have taken my cookies?"
The Kindness Club overheard and immediately offered to help. Mateo, remembering Jesus call to love your neighbor as yourself, suggested, "Lets find out who took them, but lets also remember to be kind, no matter what."
Sofia, thinking about patience, said, "We need to be patient and not jump to conclusions. Lets look for clues carefully."
Lily, remembering honesty, added, "And whoever took them should be honest and admit it. Honesty is always the best policy, even if its hard."
David, reflecting on forgiveness, said, "Even if someone did something wrong, we should be ready to forgive them, just like Jesus forgives us."
The Kindness Club started their investigation. They noticed small muddy footprints leading away from the windowsill. Following the prints, they arrived at the house of Timmy, a shy boy who lived down the street. Timmy often felt lonely and sometimes acted out.
Timmy was hiding behind a tree, looking guilty. "Did you take the cookies, Timmy?" Lily asked gently.
Timmy hung his head. "Yes," he mumbled. "I was really hungry, and they smelled so good. I didnt mean to steal them."
The Kindness Club felt sorry for Timmy. Mateo, remembering compassion, said, "We understand you were hungry, Timmy. But taking something without asking is wrong. We should always be respectful of other peoples things."
Sofia, practicing gentleness, said, "Maybe instead of taking them, you could have asked Mrs. Rodriguez? Shes very kind and would probably have shared."
Timmy started to cry. "I know I messed up," he said. "Im really sorry, Mrs. Rodriguez."
Mrs. Rodriguez, who had followed the Kindness Club, smiled warmly. "Its okay, Timmy," she said. "I forgive you. And I admire your honesty for admitting it. How about we all bake some more cookies together?"
Timmys face lit up. The Kindness Club, Timmy, and Mrs. Rodriguez spent the afternoon baking a huge batch of cookies. They learned that even when mistakes are made, kindness, honesty, forgiveness, compassion, patience, gentleness, and respect can make everything better. And thats what living by Jesus example is all about!
