The Legend of Pano and Tena

Long before the Spanish arrived and before the famous warrior Jumandy fought for his people, there was a beautiful land covered by rivers, giant trees, and endless rainforest. In that place lived the Quijos people, and this is the legend they passed down from generation to generation. One day, the chief of a village celebrated the birth of his son. He named the baby Pano. At the same time, in another nearby community, another chief welcomed a baby girl into the world. Her name was Tena. As the years passed, the two children grew up without knowing each other. Pano became a brave and skilled hunter, famous for his strength and courage. Tena became a kind, intelligent, and incredibly beautiful young woman. One season, when the forests were full of ripe fruits and animals were everywhere, Pano and his friends went on a long hunting trip. After walking for hours through the jungle, they decided to rest beside a crystal-clear river. While they were drinking chicha and relaxing, they suddenly heard laughter. Curious, Pano followed the sound and discovered a group of young women swimming in a peaceful part of the river. Among them was Tena. The moment they looked into each other's eyes, everything changed. It was love at first sight. From that day on, they secretly met every afternoon under a huge mahogany tree beside the river. They laughed, talked for hours, and dreamed about spending their future together. But secrets never stay hidden forever. When Tena's father discovered the romance, he became furious. He had already promised that his daughter would marry the son of another powerful chief from the Misahuallí region. He forbade Tena from ever seeing Pano again. Every day, Pano returned to their special meeting place, hoping she would appear. But she never came. Little by little, the strong young warrior lost his smile. He stopped eating, stopped talking, and seemed to lose all hope. The village shamans tried everything to heal him. Some believed an evil spirit had cursed him. Others thought a powerful sorcerer had attacked him with dark magic. But the truth was much simpler. His heart was broken. Finally, unable to imagine life without Tena, Pano made a tragic decision. He climbed onto a rocky cliff and threw himself into the rushing river below. As the powerful current carried him away, it seemed that the entire forest cried with him. Even the trees, the animals, and the stones felt his sadness. Days later, while Tena was quietly weaving a basket outside her home, a small bird landed nearby. Its song carried heartbreaking news. Pano was gone. Overwhelmed with grief, Tena ran into the forest without looking back. She crossed hills, rivers, and narrow paths until she finally reached the water. Without hesitation, she jumped into the river, allowing the current to carry her away. The river pushed her over rocks and through calm pools, until one bright day she found Pano once again. His spirit had become part of the river. She embraced him, and from that magical moment, the waters of the Pano River and her own joined together forever. Together, they created one great river—the Tena River. Since then, the river has flowed through the rainforest, surrounded by white sandy beaches, fruit trees, colorful flowers, and singing birds. The people say that if you stand quietly beside the river and listen carefully, especially at sunset, you can still hear the whispers of Pano and Tena, two lovers whose story became part of nature forever.
