Chinese Fairy Story: The Moon's Lost Lantern

One night, under a sky so clear it looked like a velvet blanket, Liang, a little girl with a mop of chestnut curls, wandered into the bamboo grove behind her home. She had always been drawn to the stars, especially the big, glowing moon. That night, something was different. The moon seemed to shimmer more brightly, and from its edge, a soft golden light flickered like a candle about to go out. Curious, Liang tiptoed closer and gasped—there, resting on a silver branch, was a lantern. But it was broken, its glass cracked and its light dimmed.

Liang reached out, and the lantern whispered in a gentle voice, "Please, little one. I was meant to light the way for the lost souls of the sky, but I have been broken for a long time. Can you return me to the moon?"

Liang’s heart swelled with kindness. She wrapped the lantern in her shawl and raced home to find her grandmother, who had once told her tales of the moon’s magic. "The lantern must be returned before the stars grow too cold," her grandmother said. "But you must go alone, for only your pure heart can guide it back."

With a lantern of her own, a small oil lamp wrapped in red silk, Liang set off through the forest at dusk. The trees whispered her name as she passed, and fireflies danced around her like tiny lanterns. She climbed a hill that stretched as far as her eyes could see, and at the top, she found a bridge made of clouds. It swayed gently, and each step felt like floating. Liang crossed it, and the world above opened up—a sky full of stars, and at its center, the moon, glowing brighter than ever before.

There, a silver fox with eyes like polished stones stood waiting. "You’ve come for the lantern," it said, its voice like wind chimes. Liang nodded and held out the broken lantern. The fox blinked and bowed. "To mend it, you must collect three things: a drop of the morning dew, a feather from a songbird, and a whisper from the wind."

Liang searched the stars for these gifts. She found the dew on a spider’s web at dawn, the feather on a branch where a nightingale had sung, and the whisper in the rustling leaves of a willow tree. When she returned to the moon, the silver fox took the items and mended the lantern with a flick of its tail. As it glowed again, the stars seemed to cheer, and the moon smiled warmly at Liang.

The lantern, now whole, floated gently back to its place, and a soft light spread across the sky, filling the night with peace. Liang returned home, her heart full, and that night, she dreamed of stars, lanterns, and a moon that watched over her with love.

From that day on, Liang never looked at the moon the same way again. She knew that even the smallest act of kindness could light the darkest places.
