Christmas Read Aloud Stories: The Starlight Lantern

It was the night before Christmas, and the snow had fallen in soft, fluffy drifts across the forest. In a quiet corner of the woods, a small snow owl named Orla sat on her favorite pine branch, watching the stars twinkle above. Her wings were as white as the snow, and her eyes sparkled with the same gentle light. But tonight, something was different. Orla’s lantern, which always glowed with a warm, golden light, had gone dark. Without it, she felt as if her heart had also gone cold.

"I can’t fly to the Christmas tree without my lantern," Orla said, hugging her wings close. Her voice was soft, like the rustle of leaves in the wind. "Without it, I can’t guide the way for the others." She looked down at the forest floor, where tiny footprints led to the edge of a frozen stream. She had been flying too high, and the lantern had slipped from her perch and fallen into the icy water.

Down below, a little mouse named Mira was gathering acorns in the snow. She paused when she heard Orla’s sad voice. "What’s wrong, Orla?" she asked, peering up at the owl. "Your lantern is gone!" Mira gasped. "But don’t worry, I’ll help you find it!"

Mira ran to her burrow and brought out her tiny lantern, a warm red glow that lit up her small face. "I can’t go far in the snow," she said, "but maybe we can find your lantern together." Orla nodded, and with Mira by her side, she flew down to the stream. The water was frozen, but they could see the lantern lying beneath the ice, its light flickering faintly. "It’s still working!" Mira cheered. "But how do we get it out?"

That’s when a soft voice called from the trees. "Let me help." A hedgehog named Hugo had been listening from the shadows. He rolled down the hill with his small, prickly body and tapped the ice with his claw. "I can melt the ice with my breath," he said proudly. "But it’ll take time."

Together, the three friends worked. Mira used her tiny paws to clear the snow around the ice, while Hugo blew gently until a small hole formed. Orla waited patiently, her eyes wide with hope. Finally, the lantern popped up from the water, still glowing with its warm light. Mira grabbed it and held it up to Orla. "All better!" she said.

"Thank you, both of you," Orla said, her eyes shining. "You’ve given me more than a lantern. You’ve given me friends." And with that, she flew high above the forest, her lantern shining brighter than ever. Below, Mira and Hugo waved, their hearts full of joy. As the stars twinkled overhead, the forest was filled with the warm glow of Christmas, and the sound of laughter in the snow.
