Gilly was a very small ghost. She was as white as a soft cloud. She had big blue eyes. She wore a tiny pink bow on her head. Gilly was very shy. She lived in a tall oak tree. The tree was in a happy town. The town was full of houses and gardens.
It was Halloween night. The moon was big and yellow. The leaves were orange and brown. They made a crunch sound under feet. Children were outside. They wore many fun costumes. There were pirates with hats. There were fairies with wings. There were little round pumpkins. Everyone was laughing. Everyone was having fun.
Gilly looked down from her tree. She saw the children playing. She saw them sharing treats. She wanted to play too. “I want a friend,” Gilly said softly. She peeked from behind a branch. Her pink bow wiggled. She felt nervous. Her tummy felt like it had butterflies.
Gilly floated down to the sidewalk. She saw a girl in a cat costume. “Hello,” Gilly said. Her voice was like a tiny bell. The girl looked at Gilly. The girl gasped. “A ghost!” the girl cried. She ran away fast. Gilly felt very sad. She did not want to be scary. She just wanted to say hello.
Gilly saw a group of kids. They were near a big blue house. Gilly floated closer. “Can I play?” she asked. The kids saw Gilly. They did not see her pink bow. They did not see her big blue eyes. They only saw a ghost. “Boo!” one boy shouted. Gilly hid behind a green bush. She felt like crying. She felt very lonely.
“I am not scary,” Gilly whispered. She adjusted her pink bow. She sat on a cold stone. She watched the happy children. Everyone had a friend. Gilly was all alone. The wind blew through the trees. The stars twinkled in the sky. Gilly sighed a small sigh.
Then, Gilly heard a sound. It was a sad sound. It was a little sniffle. She looked around the corner. She saw a little boy. The boy was Leo. Leo was six years old. He had brown skin. He had curly black hair. Leo was dressed as a knight. He had a shiny silver suit. He had a bright red cape.

Leo was standing by a street lamp. His candy bag was on the ground. The bag had a big hole. All his treats were gone. The candy was lost in the dark grass. Leo looked very sad. He had a small tear on his cheek. He did not have any candy left.
Gilly wanted to help. She was shy, but she was kind. She floated toward Leo. She did not say “Boo.” She did not hide. She began to glow. Gilly could make herself shine like a lamp. She turned into a soft, warm light.
Leo looked up. He saw the soft white light. He saw the small ghost. He saw the tiny pink bow. He did not run away. He did not look scared. He saw that Gilly was trying to help him. He saw her kind blue eyes.
“Look,” Gilly said. She pointed to the grass. Her light made the grass bright. Leo saw a chocolate bar. He saw a red lollipop. He saw a green candy. He saw a box of raisins.
“Oh! Thank you!” Leo said. He smiled at Gilly. Gilly smiled back. Her blue eyes sparkled. Together, they picked up the candy. Gilly held her light steady. She moved her light over the leaves. Leo found every piece of candy. He found his favorite chocolate bar.
Leo had a spare bag in his pocket. He put the candy inside. He looked at Gilly. “You are a nice ghost,” he said. “My name is Leo.”
“I am Gilly,” she said. She felt very happy. Her heart felt warm.

“Do you want to walk with me?” Leo asked. Gilly nodded her head. Her pink bow wiggled. She was so happy to have a friend.
They walked down the street together. The knight and the ghost. Other children saw them. They saw Leo laughing. They saw Gilly’s kind face. They saw her glowing light. They saw she was not scary at all.
“Look at the ghost with the bow!” a girl said. “She is helping him!”
Soon, more children came over. They saw Gilly’s light. They saw how she helped Leo. They realized Gilly was a good friend.
“Can you help me find my ring?” a princess asked.
“Can you show us the path?” a pirate asked.
Gilly was not shy anymore. She spent the night playing. She showed the way with her light. She made many new friends. It was the best Halloween ever.
Gilly learned something important. Being kind is a superpower. When you help others, they see who you really are. Leo and Gilly shared a smile under the big moon.
Kindness is the light that turns strangers into friends.
