Jack and the Beanstalk

Once upon a time, in a tiny cottage nestled at the edge of a whispering woods, lived a boy named Jack and his mother. They were very poor, and their only possession of value was a gentle, old cow named Milky-White. But the day came when Milky-White gave no more milk, and Jack’s mother sighed with a heavy heart. 'Jack,' she said, 'you must take her to the market and sell her so we may buy bread.'

Jack was a brave and cheerful boy. He led Milky-White down the dusty road, promising her a good new home. Along the way, he met a strange old man with a hat as tall as a steeple and a coat covered in silver buttons. 'Where are you going with that fine cow?' the man asked. Jack explained their plight. The man smiled and pulled five shimmering, swirling beans from his pocket. 'I will trade you these magic beans for your cow,' he said. 'Plant them, and by morning, they will reach the sky.' Jack, enchanted by the beans' soft glow, agreed and ran home.

However, his mother was not pleased. 'Beans!' she cried. 'We needed coins for food, not garden seeds!' In her frustration, she tossed the beans out the window and sent Jack to bed without supper. Jack fell asleep feeling very small and very foolish. But as he slept, a miracle took root. The magic beans drank the moonlight and stretched their vines deep into the earth and high into the air. When Jack woke, his room was bathed in a strange, green light. Outside his window stood a beanstalk as thick as a tower, its leaves forming a ladder that disappeared into the clouds.

Filled with wonder, Jack began to climb. He climbed past the birds, past the treetops, and through the soft, white mist of the clouds. At the very top, he found a land of giants. In the distance stood a castle so large that the front door was taller than a forest of oaks. Jack crept inside, his heart thumping like a drum. The kitchen smelled of roasted meat and ancient dust. Suddenly, the floor began to shake. *Thump. Thump. Thump.*

'Fee-fi-fo-fum!' a voice roared, loud enough to rattle Jack’s teeth. A massive giant entered the room, looking grumpy and tired. He sat at a table and called for his treasures. Among them was a beautiful Golden Harp. But this was no ordinary instrument. As the giant commanded it to play, the harp began to sing. Its voice was like liquid silver, but the song was desperately sad. Jack realized the harp wasn't just playing music; it was crying. The giant had stolen the harp from the world below, where its music used to heal broken hearts and turn frowns into smiles. Here, in the lonely castle, the harp’s magic was fading into sorrow.

Jack knew he had to help. He waited until the giant, lulled by the harp’s mournful tune, fell into a deep, snoring sleep. Jack crept onto the table, his footsteps light as a feather. 'Don't be afraid,' Jack whispered to the harp. 'I’m going to take you home where people can hear your joy.' The harp’s golden strings shimmered with hope. But as Jack lifted it, the harp gave a soft, musical chime of surprise. The giant stirred. One eye opened, as big as a dinner plate.

'My harp!' the giant bellowed, reaching out with hands like boulders. Jack didn't wait. He tucked the harp under his arm and ran faster than he had ever run before. He dashed out the castle gates and toward the beanstalk. Behind him, the giant’s footsteps made the clouds tremble. Jack reached the green leaves and began to slide down, the wind whistling past his ears. The giant followed, the beanstalk swaying wildly under his immense weight.

'Mother! Bring the axe!' Jack shouted as he neared the ground. His mother rushed out, seeing her son and the terrifying giant descending from the sky. Jack landed safely, grabbed the axe, and with three mighty swings, chopped through the magical vine. The beanstalk groaned and toppled over, and the giant, seeing the vine fall, had to jump back up into his cloud kingdom, never to be seen again.

As the dust settled, Jack held up the Golden Harp. It began to play a new song—a melody of sunshine, spring flowers, and laughter. The music drifted through the valley, and for the first time in years, Jack’s mother felt her sadness melt away. The village, too, felt the change. People who were grumpy became kind; those who were tired felt strong. Jack and his mother were never hungry again, for the harp’s music brought peace and prosperity to all. Jack had traded a cow for beans, but he had returned with a song that could heal the world.
