Every day, Zaza the fox told anyone who would listen how fast she was, how clever she was, and how no other animal in the forest could possibly keep up with her. At first, the other animals gathered to listen, curious. But day after day, Zaza only talked about herself, never once asking how anyone else's day had gone.
Slowly, one by one, the animals stopped stopping to chat. They still smiled and waved, but they no longer lingered to hear Zaza's stories, and she began to notice the forest felt quieter around her than it used to.
One evening, she saw a group of animals laughing together by the stream. She trotted over, ready to tell them about the enormous log she had jumped that morning — but before she could start, she noticed they were laughing about something kind: a hedgehog had helped a beetle who'd gotten stuck on his back.
Zaza sat down quietly and, for the first time in a long while, just listened. She asked the hedgehog a question about the beetle, and something warm passed between them that had nothing to do with being the fastest or the cleverest. It felt better than any bragging ever had.
The next morning, instead of announcing how far she could jump, Zaza asked her neighbor the deer how her sore leg was healing. To her surprise, the deer's whole face lit up, happy to be asked. Little by little, Zaza's evenings by the stream grew fuller again — not because she had anything new to boast about, but because she had finally learned how to listen.
She still jumped the enormous logs when no one was watching, because she genuinely loved it. But she stopped needing everyone else to know about it, and found that the forest felt warmer and less lonely once she did.
One rainy afternoon, a new fox cub moved into the forest and started boasting the exact way Zaza once had, telling anyone who would listen how fast and clever he already was. Zaza recognized herself instantly and settled down beside him, not to boast back, but simply to ask about his old home and what he missed most. The cub blinked in surprise, then started talking — really talking — for the first time since he had arrived, and Zaza realized that listening felt every bit as good from the other side too.
Moral: Friends gather around kindness and curiosity, not around boasting.
