The Case of the Vanishing Sneaker

Milan stood in the middle of the bustling school hallway, staring down at his left foot. It was covered only by a bright yellow sock that looked like a lonely banana. His favorite blue sneaker, the one with the extra-fast laces, was completely gone. "Jael, look! I've turned into a flamingo!" Milan cried, hopping precariously to keep his sock clean. Jael, his best friend, stopped and looked down. "Whoa, Milan! Where did it go? We just came from the auditorium rehearsal." How could I lose a whole shoe? Milan wondered, his face turning a light shade of pink. I must have been so excited about my lines that it just slipped off and I didn't even notice! Everyone is going to think I'm so clumsy. "Don't worry," Jael said, pulling his red hoodie snug. "We’ll find it before the bus leaves. I'm the best detective in the second grade. Let’s check the Lost and Found first." They hurried to the giant wooden bin near the main office. Jael started digging through the mountain of forgotten items. He pulled out a lonely purple mitten, a crusty paintbrush, and a silly hat that looked like a shark. "Is this it?" Jael asked, holding up a tiny, sparkly pink baby shoe. "No," Milan sighed, his shoulders sagging. "That’s way too small. This is hopeless. I'll have to go to gym class tomorrow in my socks." "Not yet! Next stop: the gymnasium," Jael declared with a determined grin. They sprinted to the gym. The air smelled like old sneakers and floor wax. They checked under the bleachers and behind the stack of thick blue tumbling mats. Milan crawled through a forest of metal legs, his yellow sock picking up grey dust bunnies. "Found something!" Jael yelled from behind a rack of basketballs. Milan’s heart leaped with joy, but Jael was only holding a very flat, very sad soccer ball. I’m going to have to walk home like a pirate with a peg leg, Milan thought gloomily. He felt a lump in his throat. "Hey," Jael said, putting a steady hand on Milan’s shoulder. "Think back. Where did we go right before the bell? We were practicing our pirate dance in the drama room." Milan’s eyes widened. "The costume trunk!" They raced back to the drama room. It was quiet and filled with the scent of old fabric. Milan ran to the big wooden trunk where they had been searching for hats. He peered inside. There, tucked between a velvet royal cape and a giant, fluffy chicken costume, was the blue sneaker. "You found it!" Milan cheered, sliding his foot into the cool, familiar shoe. He felt a massive wave of relief wash over him. Jael laughed. "I told you we’d get it back. Friends don't let friends walk around in yellow socks." Milan realized that while the shoe was important, having Jael by his side was even better. He knew that with a friend like Jael, he would never have to face a problem solo
