Imanol, a boy with eyes the color of warm honey and a mop of unruly brown hair, clutched a wilting sunflower. He shuffled through the wrought-iron gate, the words Jardín de los Amigos (Garden of Friends) twisting around the metal like ivy. This wasnt just any garden; it was a sanctuary for the forgotten. Forgotten toys, forgotten dreams, and, according to his abuela, forgotten souls. He was supposed to leave the sunflower here, a small offering to the spirits of the children who, Abuela whispered, still played amongst the roses.
Hed always dismissed Abuela’s stories as folklore, comforting tales for a lonely old woman. But today, the silence of the garden pressed in on him. The air hung thick with the scent of earth and decaying petals, a perfume both sweet and mournful. He walked past a rusty swing set, its chains creaking in the gentle breeze, and a chipped marble fountain, its water long since dried up. He found a patch of daisies near a toppled statue of a cherub and carefully placed the sunflower among them.
As he turned to leave, a faint melody drifted towards him. It was a childs song, sung in a voice so thin it was almost a whisper. He stopped, his heart pounding. He looked around, but the garden was empty. Except…near the old oak tree, he saw a shimmer, like heat rising off asphalt. He cautiously approached. As he got closer, the shimmer resolved into a group of children. They were translucent, their forms flickering like candlelight, and they were playing a game of tag, their laughter echoing softly in the air.
One of the children, a girl with long, braided hair and a spectral skipping rope, noticed him. She stopped, her eyes, which seemed to glow with an inner light, fixed on Imanol. She beckoned him closer with a translucent hand. Hesitantly, he approached. "Are you…are you the friends?" he stammered.
The girl smiled, a sad, sweet smile that tugged at Imanols heart. "We are the forgotten ones," she said, her voice like the rustling of leaves. "We play here, waiting to be remembered." She pointed to the wilting sunflower. "Thank you for the gift."
Imanol felt a lump form in his throat. He didn’t understand everything, but he understood the loneliness in her eyes. He spent the rest of the afternoon in the Jardín de los Amigos, listening to their stories, their forgotten games, their silent hopes. He didn’t play with them, not really, but he listened. And in listening, he remembered them. As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the garden, the girl smiled at him. "Come back tomorrow," she said. "Tell others about us. That is how we live on."
Imanol left the garden that evening, the gate creaking shut behind him. He no longer saw it as a place of forgotten souls, but as a place of waiting friends, a place that needed to be remembered. He knew what he had to do.
