A Story About Dog and the Lost Treat

One sunny morning, Biscuit the dog sniffed the air and caught a sweet scent—something he had never smelled before. It was the scent of a peanut butter treat, his favorite! But it was not from the kitchen. It was coming from the edge of the garden, where the wild daisies grew tall and the bees buzzed lazily. Biscuit’s tail wagged with excitement. He trotted toward the scent, his paws soft on the grass, until he found it: a small blue box, tucked behind a hollyhock. The lid was slightly ajar, and inside was a single, golden treat, wrapped in a bow. Biscuit looked around, but no one was there. He didn’t know who had left it for him, but he decided to find out.

Biscuit carried the treat carefully in his mouth and began to ask around. He started with Mr. Tilly, the old cat who sat on the porch. 'Did you leave this for me, Mr. Tilly?' Biscuit asked politely. Mr. Tilly yawned and said, 'No, I was napping. But I know who might have.' He pointed his paw toward the neighbor’s fence. 'Miss Lily is always baking something new. You should ask her.'

Biscuit bounded over to the neighbor’s yard, where Miss Lily was watering her flowers. She had a red dress and a wide-brimmed hat, and her hands smelled like vanilla and sugar. 'Hello, Biscuit!' she said with a smile. 'What brings you here?' Biscuit showed her the blue box with the treat inside. 'Oh!' Miss Lily gasped. 'That was for you! I saw you watching me bake it yesterday. I wanted to give it to you as a thank you for being such a good neighbor.'

Biscuit blinked in surprise. 'But why?' he asked. 'Because you always bring me extra kibble when I'm feeling down, and you never bark at my chickens. That’s kind of you.' Biscuit felt a warm feeling in his chest. He had never thought of himself as kind, but maybe he was. 'I’d like to thank you too, Miss Lily,' he said. 'For the treat and for being my friend.'

They sat together on the steps and shared the treat, talking about the weather, the flowers, and the best places to chase butterflies. Biscuit felt happy in a way he had never felt before. He realized that kindness was like a treat—it didn’t have to be big or fancy, just thoughtful and shared. And the best part was, it made friends.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange, Biscuit said goodbye to Miss Lily and returned home. He left the blue box on the porch, just in case someone else needed a treat. That night, as he curled up by the fire, he smiled to himself. He had found more than a treat—he had found the joy of giving and receiving kindness.
