Barnaby and the Missing Luck

Barnaby was a boy who believed in the secret power of the world. He never walked under wooden ladders, and he always carried a shiny copper penny in his left pocket for good fortune. Every morning, he hopped carefully over the cracks in the sidewalk on his way to school. He believed that if he followed these special rules, nothing bad would ever happen to him. His most important treasure was a pair of bright, mismatched socks—one neon green and one sunset orange. He called them his Winning Socks because he wore them whenever he wanted to succeed.

One sunny Tuesday, the village hosted the Great Marble Tournament. Barnaby was the best marble player in his entire class. He practiced every afternoon until his thumb was sore and his aim was perfect. However, when he woke up on the day of the tournament, he faced a total disaster. He searched his entire room, but the Winning Socks were nowhere to be found. He looked under his bed, inside his toy chest, and even behind the curtains, but they had vanished. Barnaby felt a heavy cloud of worry over his head. "I cannot play without my luck," he whispered to his dog, Buster.

He walked to the park with heavy feet and plain white socks. On the way, a sleek black cat darted across the path. Barnaby gasped and quickly spun around three times to break the bad luck. Then, just a moment later, he accidentally stepped right on a deep crack in the stone path. He felt certain that the tournament would be a total failure. When he arrived at the marble circle, his friends were already competing. Barnaby looked down at his feet and sighed. It was finally his turn to shoot.

He took a deep breath and looked at the glass marbles shining in the sun. Suddenly, he forgot about the black cat. He forgot about the cracks in the sidewalk. He only thought about the many hours he had spent practicing in his backyard. Barnaby aimed his favorite blue marble with steady fingers. He flicked his thumb with perfect strength. Clack! The marbles flew out of the circle one by one. He played better than he ever had before. By the end of the afternoon, Barnaby stood as the champion. He realized that his own hard work was the greatest magic of all. From that day on, he walked over every crack with a giant smile on his face.
