Once upon a time, in a valley where the mountains kissed the sky and the rivers sang lullabies, there lived a dragon named Dapple. Dapple had scales that shimmered like crushed gemstones, but he was very shy. Unlike the other dragons who roared and flew in great circles, Dapple preferred to curl up in a patch of sun-warmed moss and watch the butterflies flutter by. He didn’t like to dance. He didn’t like to sing. He just liked to be quiet and safe, and that was perfectly fine with him.
One spring morning, as the cherry blossoms floated gently down like pink snowflakes, a little girl named Lila came skipping through the valley. She had braids that bounced with every step and a laugh that sounded like wind chimes. She noticed Dapple peeking out from behind a rock and waved. “Hello, dragon!” she said. “Would you like to play?”
Dapple blinked slowly. “I… I don’t play,” he said, his voice soft as a whisper. “I just like to watch.”
Lila tilted her head. “But what if you tried something new? Maybe you’d like it?”
Dapple thought about this. He thought about the way the wind blew through the trees, how it made them sway like dancers. He thought about how the fireflies twinkled in the evening, like tiny stars doing a dance of their own. Maybe, he thought, he could try something new.
Lila smiled. “Let’s dance!” She twirled in a circle, and Dapple watched, wide-eyed. Then, with a deep breath, he wiggled his tail and gave a little hop. Lila clapped her hands. “Yes! That’s it!”
They danced together, Lila spinning and twirling while Dapple flapped his wings and stomped his feet. He tripped over a root and fell into a pile of leaves, but Lila just laughed and helped him up. “It’s okay to fall,” she said. “That’s part of the dance.”
As the sun set and the sky turned to a canvas of orange and pink, Dapple felt something warm and happy in his chest. He had never felt so light, so free. He had never been so brave. And when Lila said, “Goodnight, Dapple,” he whispered back, “Goodnight, Lila. Thank you.”
From that day on, Dapple wasn’t just a shy dragon anymore. He was a dragon who loved to dance, and he danced with all the creatures in the valley—foxes, frogs, and even the grumpy old owl who had once said he’d never dance with a dragon. And every night, when the moon shone bright and the stars blinked like sleepy eyes, Dapple would dance, knowing that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is try something new.
The end.
