Christmas Story Not a Finger

It was the night before Christmas, and the snow had fallen so thick it muffled every sound. Leo, a curious eight-year-old with a red scarf and a heart full of wonder, peeked out his window. The world was quiet, but not quiet enough for him. He grabbed his mittens and his favorite book of Christmas poems and slipped out into the snow, determined to find something magical.

As he wandered past the old oak tree at the edge of the woods, he heard a soft, shivering noise. Crouching down, Leo peered through the snowdrifts and saw something strange—a small, round creature covered in snowflakes, with big, round eyes and a long, wobbly tail. It was a snow monster, tiny and trembling, and it looked as if it had never seen a child before.

"Hello there," Leo whispered, his voice barely louder than the wind. The snow monster blinked at him and let out a tiny squeak, like a puff of air. Leo smiled. "You’re not very loud, are you?" he said. The snow monster gave a little nod and curled up tighter in the snow.

Leo sat beside the creature and offered it a piece of chocolate from his pocket. The snow monster sniffed it, then nibbled it with a happy hum. "I’m Leo," he said. "What’s your name?" The snow monster tilted its head and made a sound that was almost like a name—"Muffin." Leo laughed. "Muffin, huh? That’s a great name!"

As they sat together, Leo noticed that Muffin didn’t have a voice like other snow monsters. He had heard stories about snow monsters who could sing carols and make snowflakes dance, but Muffin just made quiet little noises. "Do you like Christmas, Muffin?" Leo asked. Muffin nodded and pointed to the sky, where the stars were beginning to twinkle like tiny bells.

Leo thought for a moment and then had an idea. "I know! We can make our own Christmas song." He hummed a tune from his book, and Muffin joined in with a soft, sweet sound that was like a snowflake landing on a windowpane. The more they practiced, the louder and clearer Muffin’s voice became, until he was singing full songs, his voice like wind chimes in the snow.

By the time the clock struck midnight, Muffin was singing so beautifully that even the stars seemed to listen. Leo wrapped his scarf around the snow monster and led him back home, where his parents were waiting with hot cocoa and cookies. They all sang together, and Muffin’s voice joined in, making the warmest, happiest Christmas Eve anyone had ever had.

From that day on, Muffin stayed with Leo, and every Christmas, he sang a new song, always remembering that even the quietest voice can be heard, if you’re kind enough to listen.
