Dark Grimm's Fairy Tales: The Moonlit Candle

In a village tucked beneath a forest of whispering pines, there lived a girl named Lila who never slept well. Her parents worked long hours, and the house was always quiet, save for the ticking of the old grandfather clock. One night, as a full moon shone through the curtains, Lila heard a soft tapping on her window. She opened it to find a small, round creature with glowing blue eyes, a wobbly nose, and a tail that flickered like a candle flame. It introduced itself as Glim, a moonlight monster who had been lost in the woods for days.

Lila hesitated at first. She had heard stories of the forest’s creatures—some said they were friendly, others not so much. But Glim seemed harmless, and his eyes were full of kindness. She let him in, and as the night deepened, they sat by the fire, sharing stories. Glim had never seen a house, never smelled the scent of cinnamon and honey, and he told Lila how he once lived in a cave with other moonlight monsters, but they had all vanished into the stars.

The next morning, Lila found a small, glowing candle on her windowsill. Glim had left it as a gift, saying it was made from moonlight and would light the way for any lost creature. Lila kept it on her nightstand, and every night, as she fell asleep, she would light it and imagine Glim walking safely through the forest. She rushed to the window and saw Glim, now shivering and alone in the dark. Without thinking, she ran outside, wrapped herself in a blanket, and led him back to the house. Her parents were surprised to see the small creature, but when Lila explained that Glim was lost and needed help, they welcomed him in with warm tea and cookies. The next night, Lila and Glim returned to the forest with a lantern and a map. They searched for the other monsters, calling their names, and at last, they found a clearing where the moonlight monsters had gathered in fear. With Glim’s help, Lila and her parents brought them all home, where they were safe and warm. The village children, too, began to visit Glim, and soon the forest was filled with laughter and light.

From that day on, Lila’s nights were never lonely again. The moonlight candle still burned in her room, and every night, she and Glim would sit by the window, watching the stars and telling stories. And when the children of the village came to visit, they would all gather in the forest, where the once-fearsome creatures had become friends. It was a world where kindness could light even the darkest corners of the night.
