It was the first day of school. The sun was bright and yellow. Mathew stood by the big school gate. He felt a little bit nervous. He held his mom’s hand tight. "You will have fun," Mom said. Mathew took a deep breath. He walked into the big building. The hallway was full of colors. He saw cubbies for bags and coats. Mathew found his own name tag. He sat at a small desk. The classroom was very busy. Children were laughing and playing. There were blocks and toy cars. There were many books on the shelves. Mathew looked down at his feet. He saw something shiny on the rug. It was a beautiful blue pencil. It had tiny silver stars on it. It was the prettiest pencil ever. Mathew picked it up very slowly. He felt the smooth wood. He wanted to keep the pencil. He put it inside his pocket. "This is mine now," he thought. But then, he heard a sound. A girl named Lily was crying. She looked under all the chairs. She looked inside her bag. She looked in the toy box. "I lost my lucky pencil," Lily said. Mathew felt a funny feeling. His tummy felt a bit tight. He knew the pencil was Lily’s. He looked at his pocket again. Being honest is very important. Mathew stood up from his chair. He walked over to Lily’s desk. He took out the blue pencil. "I found your pencil, Lily," he said. Lily stopped crying right away. She gave Mathew a big hug. "Thank you for being nice!" she said. Miss Honey, the teacher, smiled. "You are a very honest boy, Mathew," she said. Mathew felt very proud and happy. He did the right thing. He was not nervous anymore. He had a new best friend. School was a great place to be. He loved his new school.
