Once upon a time, in a place where trees touch the sky and rivers sing songs, there was a boy named Nahuel. Nahuel belonged to a people who had lived in the jungle for a very long time. Nahuel loved walking barefoot because he said that way he could feel the heartbeat of the earth.
One day, Nahuel decided to invite all the children to visit his home. —Come! —he said with a smile—. Today we are celebrating Aboriginal Day, which is the day of the peoples who have always taken care of nature.
Nahuel showed them how to talk to the birds using soft whistles. He also taught them that before picking a fruit from a tree, they always had to say 'thank you'. —The earth is our mother —explained Nahuel while touching a green leaf—. She gives us water, food, and colorful flowers.
In Nahuel’s community, everyone worked together. The grandmothers wove baskets with plant fibers and the grandfathers told stories about the moon and the sun by a fire. The children learned that they didn’t need plastic toys, because the river stones were little boats and the seeds of the trees were beautiful maracas that sounded 'shac-shac-shac'.
As evening fell, Nahuel painted his face with red seeds called urucú. —These marks tell who we are and how much we love our forest —he said proudly. All the children sat in a circle and shared sweet fruits and cornbread.
That day, the children learned that the indigenous peoples are the guardians of the jungle. They learned that caring for an ant, not throwing trash into the water, and hugging a tree are ways of saying 'I love you' to our planet. When the moon came out, Nahuel said goodbye with a big hug, leaving in the heart of each child a treasure: love for nature and respect for the peoples who have always protected it.
