Russian Folklore Stories: The Baker's Moonlight Bargain

In a quiet Russian village nestled between snow-dusted hills and whispering birch trees, there lived a baker named Mitya. Every morning, he rose before dawn, kneading warm dough and lighting the hearth with a smile, for he believed that kindness was the best recipe of all. One chilly evening, as the sun dipped behind the mountains and the first stars blinked awake, a silver-haired old woman appeared at his door, her eyes glowing like embers in the dark.

"Good evening, young baker," she said, her voice soft as falling snow. "I have something special for you. A locket that will bring joy to whoever wears it. But I must have a secret in return."

Mitya blinked, his cheeks growing warm. "A secret?" he asked. "What kind of secret?"

"Any secret," the woman replied with a wink. "But it must be true."

Mitya thought for a moment. He had many secrets—like the time he sneaked bread to the hungry fox, or the time he lied to his mother about finishing his chores. But he chose to say, "My secret is that I wish I could bring joy to everyone in the village, not just the ones who can pay for my bread."

The old woman smiled, pulled a silver locket from her cloak, and placed it in Mitya’s hand. "Then you are a true baker of the heart," she said. "This locket will help you. But be warned, it only works when the moon is full and the stars are bright."

The next night, the moon hung like a glowing pearl in the sky. Mitya put the locket around his neck and stepped outside, the cool night air brushing his cheeks. As he walked through the village, the locket shimmered, and suddenly, a warm light spread from his chest. The villagers, who had been grumbling about the cold and the long winter, began to laugh and sing. Even the old man who had once cursed Mitya’s bread now smiled and thanked him.

But the magic was not just for the villagers. As Mitya helped the poor, shared his bread, and listened to the lonely, the locket grew brighter and brighter. And when the old woman returned, she said, "You have done well, young baker. The locket was never meant to be kept—it was meant to be given away."
