One sunny morning, Bunny Lou had a problem. Her favorite pair of polka-dot socks had vanished! She checked her drawer, her laundry basket, even under the couch—no luck. Her feet were bare, and she was not happy. 'This is the worst day ever!' she hopped around the forest, scuffing her toes on the ground and kicking pebbles.
As she stomped past the duck pond, she bumped into Mr. Waddle, the wobbly old duck who always had a joke ready. 'Lost something, dear?' he quacked. 'Maybe your socks are hiding in the belly of the Great Snail,' he suggested with a wink. 'He eats everything that's not nailed down.'
Bunny Lou gasped. 'The Great Snail? That's just a legend!' But she had no better ideas. With a determined hop, she followed Mr. Waddle to the edge of the marsh where the Great Snail lived. The creature was as big as a house, slow-moving and sleepy. 'Excuse me, sir,' said Bunny Lou, 'have you seen my socks?' The snail blinked slowly. 'I have many things in my tummy,' he said. 'But I don't eat socks. I only eat hats.'
Bunny Lou's ears drooped. Just then, a chorus of giggles echoed from the bushes. A group of squirrels peeked out, holding up her missing socks. 'We borrowed them for a pillow fight!' they said. 'We didn't know they were yours!' With a sigh, Bunny Lou smiled. 'Well, I'm glad you're all safe and happy. But next time, maybe ask first.'
The squirrels giggled again and returned the socks. Bunny Lou put them on, feeling warm and cozy once more. She thanked the snail, waved goodbye to Mr. Waddle, and went home with a lesson learned: 'Always ask before you borrow—and never trust a snail with your laundry.'
