Every morning, Lila tiptoed past the old oak tree at the edge of her village. She always thought she heard a soft, bubbling sound from behind the tree, but it vanished as soon as she turned to look. One morning, as the sun painted the sky in gold, Lila stepped closer, peering around the gnarled trunk. There it was—a narrow brook, gurgling gently over smooth stones, its water shimmering like glass in the morning light. The brook had never been there before, and it vanished when she blinked. She reached out, but the water was gone. Only the stones remained, cool and smooth under her fingers.
That night, Lila dreamt of a voice, low and gravelly, whispering, 'Come back at dawn, little one.' She woke with a jolt and a smile. The next morning, she returned to the oak tree with her blanket and a jar from the kitchen. As the sun rose, the brook appeared again, wider now, and the stones seemed to glow faintly. She knelt and filled her jar with water, then placed it on the ground. A stone, no bigger than her hand, rolled up to her and said, 'You’re brave, Lila. But you’re not ready to hear our stories yet.'
Lila giggled. 'What kind of stories?' she asked. The stone chuckled. 'Stories that once made the brook sing. But the songs have been lost to the world.' Lila sat beside the brook, watching the water ripple. 'Can you teach me?' she asked. The stone nodded and rolled into the brook, where it turned into a small bridge of stones that led to a hidden pool. 'Come,' it said, 'and we’ll begin.'
The pool was surrounded by trees that sparkled with dew and flowers that sang when the wind passed through them. Lila stepped carefully across the stones, and the brook sang a soft, lullaby-like tune. The stone spoke again, 'Every story has a heart. Some hearts are kind, like yours, and some are cold, like the stones that once forgot how to feel.' Lila tilted her head. 'Why would stones forget how to feel?' she asked. The stone sighed. 'Because they were left alone for too long. But you, Lila, have brought light back to this place.'
As the sun climbed higher, more stones appeared, each one telling a tale of friendship, bravery, and kindness. Lila listened, wide-eyed, and the brook’s song grew louder, filling the forest with joy. When she finally returned home, her jar was still full of water, and the brook had vanished once more. But she knew it would return at dawn, waiting for her.
That night, Lila dreamed of the brook again, and this time, she heard its song echoing in her heart. She smiled as she drifted off to sleep, knowing that kindness could bring even the coldest stones back to life.
Moral: Kindness can awaken even the quietest hearts.
