The Fox and the Moon of Lake Titicaca

Once upon a time, on the shores of the majestic Lake Titicaca, there lived a fox named Zorrito Veloz. Zorrito was known throughout the region for his cleverness and his ability to find solutions to any problem. One night, while walking under the starry sky of the Andes, Zorrito stopped in his tracks when he saw something extraordinary reflected in the lake's waters: the moon, brighter and larger than ever, seemed to be trapped beneath the water.

Curious and determined to free the moon, Zorrito ran toward the lake. "Moon, moon! What are you doing down there?" he cried, alarmed. But the moon did not respond, only continuing to shine, reflecting its silvery light on the calm waters.

Zorrito knew he had to think quickly. He remembered a story his grandfather had told him about how foxes could speak with the spirits of the lake on full moon nights. So, taking a deep breath, he began to recite the ancient fox song: "Spirits of the water, friends of the forest, help me free the moon that rests in her crystal bed."

Suddenly, the water began to gently ripple, and from the depths emerged Yaku, the spirit of the lake. "Zorrito Veloz," said Yaku with a voice as soft as the whisper of water, "the moon is not trapped; she simply reflects her beauty in my waters. Come back tomorrow and you will see that she is up there in the sky where she has always been."

Zorrito felt a little silly, but also relieved. "Thank you, Yaku, for showing me the truth. I promise to care for your home as you care for our mountains," he replied. Yaku smiled and disappeared back into the waters.

The fox returned to his den, thinking about what he had learned. From now on, he would not only look with his eyes, but also with his heart. The next day, when the moon once again illuminated the sky, Zorrito sat by the lake, smiled, and understood the beauty of reflections and looking beyond what is visible.

From that day on, Zorrito Veloz became the guardian of Lake Titicaca, making sure that all the animals understood the importance of nature and its magical reflections. And so, under the light of the moon, the lake and the fox shared their secrets for generations.
