The Mystery of the Missing Hourglass

Mateo wasn't an ordinary detective. He didn't have a giant magnifying glass or wear a long trench coat, but he had something much better: a curiosity that didn't fit in his chest and a notebook where he wrote down everything that seemed strange. He was in sixth grade, and although sometimes it was hard for him to find the exact words to explain what he thought, he was a master at noticing things others overlooked. That Tuesday, the atmosphere at Valle del Sol School was unusually tense. When Mateo entered the classroom, he noticed something right away: Mr. Martín, the teacher, wasn't writing the date on the board as he always did. Instead, he was walking back and forth, constantly looking at the floor and scratching his neck, with his brow so furrowed that his eyebrows looked like a single line.

—Is something wrong, teacher? —asked Mateo, placing his backpack on the chair.

Mr. Martín took a deep breath. —Mateo, my hourglass has disappeared from my desk. The one we use for debates. It was here yesterday at the end of the day, and today, it's simply vanished. There's no trace of it.

Mateo looked at the desk. It was spotless, except for a small circle of dust where the object used to be. Near the edge of the table, he noticed something that caught his attention: a small, shiny blue stain, almost sticky. He didn't say anything, but he wrote it down in his notebook. Clue 1: Blue stain.

During recess, Mateo decided to investigate. He knew that to solve a mystery, he didn't always need someone to tell him the truth, but rather he had to look at what others did. He sat on a bench in the courtyard and watched. First, he saw Lucía. She was sitting alone, moving her legs quickly and constantly looking toward the office door. Her hands were hidden in the pockets of her hoodie. Why is she so nervous if she's usually the calmest one? Mateo thought.

Then came Hugo. Hugo was running from the sports pavilion. As he passed by Mateo, Mateo noticed that Hugo had his uniform pants stained with something white, like chalk, and he was breathing heavily, even though he hadn't come from PE class. Clue 2: White kneepads.

Suddenly, the bell rang. When returning to class, Mr. Martín announced that if the hourglass didn't turn up, no one would be able to participate in the chess tournament on Friday. The silence in the classroom was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Mateo looked around. Lucía still had her hands in her pockets. Hugo was rubbing his hands against his pants. Then, Mateo remembered the blue stain on the desk. He looked at his classmates' pencil cases. Lucía's was open, and inside, there was a bottle of blue glitter glue that was leaking a little. But Lucía didn't seem guilty of a theft, she seemed... worried.

Mateo approached Lucía during the class change. —Lucía, did something break? —he asked gently.

She jumped and her eyes filled with tears. —I didn't mean to, Mateo. Yesterday after class, I wanted to see how long it took for the sand to fall. I took it, but it slipped from my hands. One corner broke and some sand spilled out. I tried to glue it with my glitter glue, but it didn't work. I got scared and hid it in the cleaning closet.

Mateo nodded. He had solved half the mystery. But why was Hugo stained with chalk and nervous? He went to the cleaning closet at the end of the hallway. There, he found Hugo, crouched down, trying to clean something with an old mop. When he saw Mateo, Hugo turned red like a tomato.

—It's not what it looks like! —Hugo exclaimed. —I saw Lucía hide something here yesterday and thought it was a joke. I came to find it to return it to the teacher, but I tripped over the cleaning buckets and knocked down a box of chalk powder from the top shelf. I've been trying all morning to clean up the mess so no one gets in trouble.

Mateo put the pieces together in his head. Lucía wasn't a thief, she was a scared girl who had had an accident. Hugo wasn't an accomplice, he was a friend trying to help, though a bit clumsily. The hourglass wasn't lost, it was just injured and hidden behind some cleaning buckets.

—Listen —Mateo said to both of them. —If we go to Mr. Martín now and tell him the truth, he will understand. What bothers him the most isn't that the hourglass broke, but that no one said anything. Plus, my mom has a special glue that really sticks glass, not like the glitter glue.

Lucía and Hugo looked at each other. The relief on their faces was obvious. Together, they went to the teacher's office. Mr. Martín listened carefully. He didn't get angry. On the contrary, he thanked them for their honesty and praised Mateo for his observation skills.

—How did you know I had the glue? —Lucía asked as they walked back.

—I wasn't sure —Mateo replied with a smile —but I saw the blue stain and remembered that you were making a poster with glitter yesterday. I just had to connect the dots.

That afternoon, Mateo wrote in his notebook: Case closed. Sometimes people hide things not because they're bad, but because they're scared. To understand the world, it's not enough to hear what people say, you have to watch what they do. On Friday, everyone played chess, and the hourglass, with a small shiny scar at the base, returned to Mr. Martín's desk to mark the time again. Mateo felt proud. He didn't need to be a movie detective to help his friends; he just needed to observe, think, and, above all, know how to listen to the silences.
