In the sun-drenched town of Meadowview, where the air always smelled of freshly cut grass and wild honeysuckle, lived two girls named Lily and Mia. You’ve got a crush on the quietest boy in school. How mushy!' Mia spent the rest of the afternoon making kissing noises and teasing Lily about her 'secret prince,' laughing every time Lily tried to hide her face. Lily felt a small, cold knot form in her stomach. She laughed along, trying to play it off, but the mockery stung more than a scraped knee.

As the school year began, the girls were assigned a group project on local ecosystems. To Mia’s initial horror and Lily’s quiet excitement, they were paired with Oliver. During their first meeting at the library, Mia sat with her arms crossed, prepared to be bored. But as Oliver began to explain his ideas, showing them his detailed sketches of the creek and the various dragonflies that lived there, Mia found her arms slowly uncrossing. One Friday, the tension finally snapped. Lily had worked up the courage to bring Oliver a special set of charcoal pencils she had saved her allowance for. But when she reached the Silver Willow, she saw Mia already there. Mia was wearing her favorite yellow dress, and she was handing Oliver a small, hand-painted stone. Oliver was beaming, his eyes bright with a warmth he usually reserved for his sketches. 'You’re the best, Mia,' he said softly. 'I’ve never had a friend who understood my art like this.'

Lily felt a wave of betrayal so hot it brought tears to her eyes. 'You made fun of me!' she cried out, stepping from behind the bushes. Both Mia and Oliver jumped. 'You called it mushy! You laughed at me for weeks, and now you’re here, trying to take him away?'

Mia’s face turned bright red. 'I didn't know he was like this, Lily! People change their minds. Besides, it’s not my fault he likes talking to me!'

'You’re a hypocrite!' Lily shouted, her voice trembling. 'And you’re a bad friend!'

For the next week, the silence between Lily and Mia was deafening. They walked on opposite sides of the hallway. They ate lunch at different tables. The town of Meadowview felt gray and empty.
