One crisp autumn morning, Lily decided to explore the forest behind her cottage. The leaves crunched underfoot, and the air smelled of pine and earth. As she wandered deeper, she noticed a faint glow flickering in the underbrush. Curious, she tiptoed closer and found a small lantern, its light dim but steady. 'Who left you here?' she whispered, picking it up gently.
Suddenly, a deep voice rumbled behind her. 'That’s my lantern!' Lily turned to see a dragon with golden scales and kind amber eyes. He was smaller than she expected, and his wings were folded neatly against his body. 'I was flying home when the wind blew it from my saddle,' he explained, looking a bit embarrassed. 'I’ve been searching for it ever since.'
Lily smiled. 'I found it! I can help you find your way back.' The dragon’s eyes lit up with gratitude. 'You’re very kind,' he said. 'My name is Ember. Would you like to come with me?'
They set off together, the lantern’s glow casting a warm light on their path. As they walked, Ember shared stories of his home in the mountains, where the sky sparkled with stars and the air smelled like clouds. Lily listened, fascinated, and asked questions about everything from dragon eggs to dragon tea. 'It’s made from leaf and honey,' Ember laughed. 'But I’m not sure I’d ever drink it again after this adventure.'
As they traveled, they helped a lost squirrel find her nest, shared berries with a hungry fox, and even played hide-and-seek with a group of curious hedgehogs. Each time, Lily and Ember worked together, showing kindness and care. Ember’s wings fluttered with joy as he realized how much fun it was to be with someone who truly cared about others.
At last, they reached the mountain peaks, where Ember’s home shimmered in the distance. 'Thank you, Lily,' he said, his voice full of warmth. 'You helped me find more than just my lantern. You helped me find friends.' Lily waved goodbye, the lantern now safely in Ember’s saddle. She carried a tiny piece of dragon scale in her pocket, a reminder of their special day.
Years later, when Lily told her grandchildren about the dragon she once met, she always ended with the same words: 'Be kind, and you’ll find magic everywhere.'
