At the edge of the meadow stood a hill that every animal loved to climb — except Tessa the turtle. From the bottom, the hill looked impossibly steep, and Tessa was sure that if she started climbing, she would tumble right back down and land upside-down in her shell, unable to get up.
Every day, she watched the rabbits bound up the hill and the birds circle its peak, wishing she could see the view from the top just once. But every time she took a step toward it, her legs would freeze, and she would turn back toward the safety of the pond instead.
One morning, a young fox named Ruben sat down beside her. "Why don't you ever climb the hill?" he asked. "I'm scared I'll fall," Tessa admitted, feeling her cheeks grow warm with embarrassment. Ruben nodded thoughtfully. "What if I climbed right next to you? If you started to wobble, I could help steady you."
Tessa hesitated for a long moment, but the thought of trying with a friend beside her felt different than trying alone. Slowly, carefully, she took her first step onto the hill. Ruben walked patiently at her pace, never rushing ahead. Halfway up, Tessa's foot slipped on a loose stone, and her heart raced — but Ruben was right there, nudging a rock under her foot until she found her balance again.
Step by step, they climbed together, and step by step, Tessa's fear grew smaller. When they finally reached the top, Tessa looked out over the whole meadow, the pond glittering far below, and felt something she had never quite felt before: proud of herself.
"I did it," she whispered. "We did it," Ruben said with a grin. From that day on, Tessa still climbed carefully, but she never again let fear alone decide what she could try.
A few weeks later, Tessa spotted a young mole trembling at the bottom of the very same hill, staring up at it with wide, worried eyes. Tessa remembered exactly how that felt. "Would you like some company?" she asked gently, settling in beside him at his own slow pace. This time, it was Tessa doing the steadying, and she found that helping someone else up the hill felt almost as good as reaching the top herself.
Moral: Courage doesn't mean feeling no fear — it means taking the first step anyway, especially when a friend is willing to take it with you.
