Once upon a time, in a lush green valley nestled between two tall hills, lived three little goats named Billy, Bree, and Ben. They were the liveliest goats in all of Goatland, always playing tag through the fields and leaping over the stream that flowed from the mountain. But one day, they heard a tale about a magical hill on the other side of the valley where the grass was the juiciest and the flowers the brightest. The only way to get there was across the old stone bridge that creaked and groaned with every step.
"But wait," said their mother, "the bridge is guarded by a grumpy old troll named Gruff. He doesn’t like visitors, and he especially doesn’t like goats. You must be very careful."
"We’ll be fine," said Billy, the bravest of the three. "We’re clever, and we have each other."
So the three goats set off early one morning, their hooves tapping rhythmically on the forest path. The air smelled of pine and earth, and the sunlight filtered through the trees like golden coins. When they reached the bridge, it was as crooked and creaky as they had heard. It groaned loudly as Billy stepped on it.
"Who goes there?" came a deep, rumbling voice from beneath the bridge.
It was Gruff, the troll. His eyes were as round as stones, and his beard was as long as a river.
"We’re just crossing," said Billy. "We’re going to the hill on the other side."
"Not without paying me first," growled Gruff. "I charge every creature that wants to cross. One goat for the toll."
"But we’re little," said Bree, the smallest of the three. "We can’t pay a goat toll."
Gruff’s eyes narrowed. "Then you won’t be crossing," he said.
But Billy had an idea. "Wait, Gruff," he said. "We’re not just any goats. We’re the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We can outwit you."
Gruff snorted. "You think you can trick me?"
Billy stepped forward. "We’ll each cross one at a time, but we’ll all go together. That way, you’ll never know who is on the bridge at the same time."
Gruff looked confused. "What does that mean?"
"It means," said Ben, the oldest, "you’ll never catch us all at once."
So Billy crossed first, his hooves making a soft clatter on the stones. Gruff waited below, growling, but Billy reached the other side safely. Then Bree went next, and finally Ben. Each time, Gruff waited in the shadows, ready to pounce, but the goats were gone before he could strike.
"You’re clever," Gruff admitted, slumping back into his cave. "But I’m tired of guarding this bridge. I think I’ll go take a nap."
And with that, he fell into a deep sleep, never to bother the goats again. The Three Billy Goats Gruff reached the magical hill, where they ate the juiciest grass and played until the sun set.
And from that day on, the bridge was free for all to cross, and the Three Billy Goats Gruff were the most admired goats in Goatland.
"Teamwork and cleverness can overcome even the toughest challenges," said their mother, as they drifted off to sleep under the stars.
