Princess Iris and the Ogres Garden

Princess Iris of Floralia was known for her kindness, a trait often mistaken for naiveté. When the kingdom was plagued by a blight, the Royal Mages declared the only cure lay in the heart of the Ogres Garden, a place said to be guarded by Grungle, a monstrous ogre with a heart of stone. Fear gripped the kingdom, but Iris, despite her delicate appearance, volunteered to retrieve the cure.

Armed with nothing but a basket of freshly baked bread (her grandmothers recipe, rumored to soothe even the fiercest beast), Iris set off. The journey was arduous, fraught with thorny vines and shadowy forests. Finally, she reached the garden, a riot of strangely beautiful, yet unnerving, flora. In the center, slumped beneath a weeping willow, sat Grungle. He was far larger and uglier than the stories described, his skin the color of mud, his tusks like jagged rocks. He looked utterly miserable.

Hello, Iris said, her voice trembling slightly. Ive brought you bread.

Grungle grunted, his eyes, surprisingly, filled with a deep sadness. Go away, little princess. This is no place for you.

Iris didnt flinch. She offered him the bread. My grandmother always said bread makes everything better.

He hesitantly took a loaf. The aroma filled the air. He took a bite, his eyes widening. It… it tastes like… home.

Over the next few days, Iris visited Grungle, bringing bread and listening to his woes. He was lonely, he confessed, and the garden, his only companion, was slowly dying. The blight that plagued Floralia had also struck his sanctuary. He had tried everything to save it, but nothing worked.

Iris, remembering her grandmothers wisdom about the interconnectedness of all things, realized the cure wasnt a physical object, but an understanding. She asked Grungle about the garden, its history, its needs. He spoke of a rare flower, the Sunpetal, whose nectar held the secret to the gardens health, but it had withered long ago. Iris, however, remembered seeing similar withered petals in the Royal Herbarium, brought there generations ago by a traveling botanist. She rushed back to Floralia, retrieved the ancient pollen, and returned to Grungle.

Together, they carefully pollinated the remaining Sunpetal plants. Slowly, miraculously, they bloomed, their golden nectar flowing. Grungle used the nectar to revive the rest of the garden, and Iris took enough to cure Floralia. The blight vanished, replaced by vibrant life. Grungle, no longer lonely, had found a friend and a purpose. And Iris, no longer just a kind princess, became known as Iris the Wise, the princess who healed with bread and understanding.
