One quiet night, Lila lay in her bed, unable to fall asleep. The stars twinkled outside her window, and the wind whispered through the trees. She turned over and over, tossing her blanket, but her eyes would not close. Just then, a soft, sweet melody drifted through the air, like a song made of moonlight. It was not from the radio or the TV, but from somewhere above — from the moon itself.
"Who’s there?" Lila whispered, sitting up. Her room was bathed in silver light, and the melody grew louder, wrapping around her like a warm blanket. She tiptoed to the window and peered out. There, floating in the sky, was a small figure with silver hair and a cloak made of clouds. It was a little moon creature, no taller than a doll, playing a harp made of starlight.
"Hello, little one," the moon creature said, her voice as soft as a sigh. "I am Luma, the moon’s songkeeper. I play this lullaby for the world, so that every child can drift to dreamland with peace in their hearts. But tonight, the song is not reaching your ears. Can you help me?"
Lila blinked. "I don’t know how to help you, but I’d love to try."
Luma smiled. "Then follow me."
With a gentle wave of her hand, the moon creature led Lila out into the garden. The grass sparkled beneath her feet, and flowers whispered secrets in the breeze. They climbed a hill, where the night sky opened wide above them. Luma pointed to the moon. "The lullaby is too quiet. It needs a heart to carry it. You must sing it for the world."
Lila looked down at her hands, unsure. "I can’t sing. I don’t know any songs."
"You don’t need to know any songs," Luma said kindly. "You just need to sing from your heart."
Lila closed her eyes and thought of her mother’s lullabies, her father’s bedtime stories, the soft giggles of her baby brother. She opened her mouth and sang — not perfectly, but with all her love. The stars around them twinkled brighter, the moon swelled with light, and the song spread across the earth like a soft breeze.
Back in her room, Lila felt her eyelids grow heavy. The world around her grew quiet, and the melody of the moon wrapped her in a peaceful sleep. She dreamed of singing to the stars and dancing with clouds, and when she woke in the morning, her heart was full of wonder.
From that night on, Lila always listened for the moon’s lullaby, and when she heard it, she would sing along, just a little, to help the world fall asleep with love.
