Bedtime Stories for 2 Year Olds: The Moonlit Monster

One night, when the moon was as round and bright as a big, shiny marshmallow, a little monster named Mumble woke up from his nest in the forest. His belly rumbled like a thundercloud, and he sniffed the air. 'Mmm, I smell cookies,' he said, sniffing again. But the forest was quiet, and the only sound was the rustle of leaves and the croon of the nightingale.

Mumble tiptoed through the woods, his green fur brushing the grass. 'Where are the cookies?' he called out. A squirrel peeked out from a tree. 'Cookies? That’s a silly thing to be looking for at night, little monster.' Mumble puffed out his cheeks. 'I’m not little,' he said. 'I’m a monster!'

The squirrel just giggled and scurried away. Mumble was feeling grumpy, until he heard a soft sniffle. Behind a bush, there was a tiny, pink piglet with a snotty nose. 'I’m lost,' the piglet said. 'I was following my brother, but now I can’t find him.' Mumble blinked. 'You’re lost? I could help you.'

He knelt down and looked the piglet in the eye. 'I know the way to the cookie tree. It’s near the old oak. Want to come with me?' The piglet’s eyes lit up. 'Yes! But I don’t like cookies. I like carrots.' Mumble scratched his head. 'Well, I like cookies. But maybe we can look for carrots too.'

They walked hand in paw, the piglet’s little hooves making soft *ploppity-ploppity* sounds on the forest floor. Mumble pointed out the stars, which twinkled like sleepy eyes. 'That one’s called Polaris,' he said. 'It’s the North Star. It helps us find our way.' The piglet smiled. 'You know a lot about stars.'

They found the cookie tree, but it was just a big, leafy tree with a few berries on it. Mumble was a little disappointed, but then he noticed the piglet’s ears were drooping. 'You’re tired, aren’t you?' he asked. The piglet yawned. 'I’m sleepy, but I don’t want to be alone.'

Mumble thought for a moment. 'Maybe I can stay with you until you find your brother.' He curled up beside the piglet, and together they counted the stars until they were both fast asleep. When the sun peeked over the horizon, the piglet’s brother found them, and he hugged his little brother tightly. 'I was so worried!' he said.

That night, Mumble had a warm, soft bed made of leaves and moss, and he dreamed of friendly pigs and twinkling stars. He didn’t eat any cookies, but he had the best bedtime ever. And when he woke up the next morning, he knew a very important thing: kindness is the sweetest cookie of all.
