One quiet evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills and the first stars blinked awake, little Mei tiptoed through the garden with her mother. The air was cool and smelled of jasmine, and the moon was a pale silver coin in the sky. Mei had always been curious about the old willow tree at the edge of the garden, with its long, whispering branches and roots that seemed to curl like fingers into the earth.
"Why do you think the tree is so lonely?" Mei asked, her voice barely a breath. Her mother smiled gently. "Maybe it holds stories, just like you do."
That night, Mei dreamed of the willow tree. She saw it glowing faintly, and beneath its roots lay a small, round lantern, glowing with a soft blue light. When she touched it, the lantern hummed and lifted into her hands. The moment she opened it, a warm, golden light spilled out, and she was no longer in her bed but standing in a forest of glowing trees, their leaves shimmering like glass.
"Welcome, child of Earth," said a voice, gentle as wind. A tall, silver-haired figure stepped from the shadows, wearing robes that flowed like water. "I am the Keeper of Lanterns, and you have found one of our ancient gifts."
Mei’s eyes widened. "Can I go anywhere with it?"
"Yes, but only if your heart is kind." The Keeper smiled. "The lantern shows the way to those who seek truth, but only if they offer kindness in return."
Mei followed the Keeper through the glowing forest, where the air smelled of honey and pine, and fireflies danced in the shape of Chinese characters. They came upon a small village of tiny houses, where a young boy was crying by the riverbank. His boat had tipped over, and the fish he had caught had slipped away.
"Would you like help?" Mei asked, offering her hand. The boy looked up, eyes wide with hope. "Yes, please."
Mei helped him gather the fish, and the Keeper smiled. "Kindness is the light that guides us."
As they continued their journey, Mei learned that each lantern had a different power. Some could show the way through dark forests, others could calm storms, and one even helped lost travelers find their way home. But they all shared one rule: they could only be used by those who gave kindness freely.
When Mei finally returned to her garden, the lantern was still in her hands, but now it was empty. She looked up at the willow tree, now glowing softly as if it had been waiting for her all along. She smiled, feeling warm and full of wonder. From that night on, Mei always carried a little bit of kindness with her, and the willow tree never seemed lonely again.
The Keeper’s words echoed in her heart: When you give kindness, you light the world.
