But Lila’s favorite part of the day was the evening, when she would sit by her window and watch the stars twinkle like tiny lanterns in the sky.

One night, as she baked a batch of apple tarts, a soft chittering sound came from the window. She looked up and gasped—a tiny starling, its feathers shimmering like silver, perched on the sill. 'Good evening, baker,' it said in a voice as clear as wind chimes. 'I am Starla, and I come with a request.'
