Indian Folk Tales: The Moon and the Turtle’s Gift

Long ago, in a quiet forest nestled between the mountains and the sea, the moon was very proud of her silver glow. Each night, she shone so brightly that the animals could not sleep, and the trees whispered complaints to the wind. One evening, a little turtle named Tari, who had always been gentle and thoughtful, decided to speak to the moon herself.

Tari waddled up the hill, her shell glinting in the moonlight. When she reached the top, she looked up and said, 'Dear Moon, your light is beautiful, but it keeps us awake. Could you please shine a little softer?' The moon blinked, surprised. 'I do not know how to change my glow. I was born to shine.'

Tari thought for a moment, then said, 'Maybe you can ask the stars to help. They are kind and wise, and they understand the needs of the forest.' The moon smiled and called out to the stars. One by one, they answered, but none could dim their own light. They were too proud of their brightness.

Tari was not discouraged. She returned to the forest and called out to all the animals. 'We need the stars to shine a little less, so that the moon can shine a little less too. But how can we ask them?' A squirrel offered, 'Maybe we can make them feel the forest’s need.'

So, the animals worked together. They made a great fire with dry leaves and branches, and as the fire burned, they sang and danced around it, telling stories of the moon and stars. They spoke of how the stars had once been part of the earth, and how they had left to become guides in the sky. The stars, moved by the beauty of the stories and the love in the voices, listened carefully.

At last, the brightest star, named Kala, said, 'I have been too proud. I will help you.' Kala dimmed her light just a little, and the other stars followed. The moon, seeing this, dimmed her glow too, and the forest fell into a peaceful slumber.

From that night on, the moon and stars shone just enough to light the way, but not too much to keep the forest awake. Tari became known as the Turtle of Kindness, and the animals remembered her lesson: that even the brightest light can be shared, and that kindness brings balance to the world.

And so, every night, the moon and stars shine gently, and the forest sleeps soundly. The tale of Tari reminds us that even the smallest voice can bring great change when it speaks with kindness and wisdom.
