Irish Fairy Stories: The Secret of the Silver Bough

Nessa was a bright-eyed girl with a mop of wild curls and a heart full of questions. Every morning, she would wake up before the sun and tiptoe out of her cottage to explore the woods behind her home. Her village, nestled between emerald hills and whispering trees, had always whispered tales of fairies and ancient magic. But Nessa wanted to find the truth for herself.

The fairy led Nessa deeper into the glen, where the trees grew taller and the air felt like a hush before a storm. "The first test is patience," the fairy said. "Sit here and wait until the stars come out."

Nessa sat quietly, her legs crossed, her eyes on the sky. She waited until the first star twinkled into view, then the second, then the third. The fairy watched, her expression softening. "You pass the first test," she said.

The second test was honesty. "Tell me the truth," the fairy said, holding up a small mirror. "What do you see?"

Nessa looked into the mirror and saw not just her face, but the reflection of her heart. "I see a girl who wants to help others and make the world a better place," she said. The fairy smiled. "You pass the second test."

Finally, the fairy led Nessa back to the silver branch. "This branch can bring peace to your village," she said. "But it must be given freely, with no expectation of reward."
