Julieta's Red Secret

Martina had never really thought about blood. She knew we needed it to live, of course, but it wasn’t something she questioned every day… until she met Julieta.

Julieta was new to the school. She was seventeen, had short hair, and a shy smile. She didn’t talk much at first, but one day in biology class, when the teacher mentioned the word transfusion, she raised her hand.

'I get blood every three weeks,' she said, as if she were talking about going to the dentist.

The class fell silent.

'I have severe thalassemia. It’s a genetic disease. My body doesn’t produce enough hemoglobin, so I depend on transfusions to keep living.'

Martina didn’t know what to say. Julieta said it so naturally that it was disorienting. But something in her chest stirred. It wasn’t pity. It was a mix of amazement, respect... and something she didn’t understand at that moment.

Weeks later, the school organized a blood donation day. It was for people over sixteen and voluntary. Martina thought of everything she had heard: that it hurt, that it was uncomfortable, that maybe she would feel dizzy. She hesitated.

But then she saw Julieta sitting alone in the courtyard, with a bandage on her arm. She couldn’t donate, but she was there, as always, with her notebook full of drawings of dragons and constellations.

Martina approached.

'Is it okay if I ask you something?'

Julieta smiled.

'Ask away.'

'What would happen if you couldn’t get blood?'

The answer was direct, without drama.

'I start to weaken. My organs get tired. And then... well, I wouldn’t last much longer.'

Martina swallowed. That was the moment. That was the decision.

The next day, she showed up at the school gym. She donated blood for the first time. She felt nervous, but not scared. She felt strong, not because of the physical act, but because she knew why she was doing it.

When it was all over, they gave her a juice and a pamphlet that said: 'One donation can save up to three lives.'

Martina thought: 'Or one, many times.'

Outside, Julieta was waiting.

'Did you do it?' she asked.

Martina raised her arm with the bandage.

'Yes. Maybe someday, some of my blood will reach you.'

'Maybe,' said Julieta, and smiled. 'Or someone else like me. Whoever it is… thank you.'

Martina looked down, a little embarrassed, but also happy.

That day she understood that being a hero isn’t always about flying or saving a burning building.

Sometimes, being a lifeline is simply extending your arm and giving... LIFE.
