One cool autumn evening, as the stars began to twinkle above the forest, little Hester the hedgehog curled up in her leafy nest, her tiny nose twitching with curiosity. 'Why is the moon up there in the sky?' she asked her mother, who was knitting a scarf from dandelion fluff. Her mother smiled and said, 'That’s a question for the Noggin Story Time, my dear.'
The next night, Hester tiptoed through the forest, her paws making soft plopping sounds on the damp moss. She found the wise old owl, Professor Puck, perched on the highest branch of the Great Willow Tree. 'Professor Puck!' she chirped. 'Why is the moon in the sky?' The owl blinked slowly. 'Ah, a question as old as the stars themselves. But I cannot answer it alone. You must find the clever raccoon, Rascal, who lives near the riverbank.'
Hester wiggled through the tall grass and came upon Rascal, who was busy stacking pebbles into a tiny tower. 'Hello, Rascal!' she said. 'Do you know why the moon is in the sky?' Rascal tilted his head. 'Well, I’ve heard a tale from the old trees. The moon used to hide in the clouds, but a kind giant once gave her a lantern so she could shine for all to see.'
'But why does she stay up there?' Hester asked. Rascal scratched his chin. 'I think she stays in the sky because she’s the friend of the stars, and they all want to be together.'
Professor Puck, hearing this, fluttered down and added, 'The truth is, the moon is up there because she loves to shine and to be seen. She brings light to the world, and she is watched over by the stars, who keep her company when she feels lonely.'
Hester sat back on her haunches, her eyes wide. 'So the moon is up there to help us and to be with her friends?'
'Exactly!' said Rascal with a grin. 'And now you know the answer to your Noggin Story Time question.'
That night, as Hester lay in her nest, she looked up at the moon, now glowing softly above the trees. She felt warm and safe, knowing that even though the moon was far away, she was there for everyone, shining bright and full of love. And as she closed her eyes, she dreamed of the moon dancing with the stars, forever in the sky, watching over all who sleep beneath her light.
The end.
