Perrault's Fairy Tales: The Fox and the Lemon Tree

In a forest where the trees whispered secrets to the wind and the flowers danced in the sunlight, there stood a lemon tree as old as the hills. Its golden fruit gleamed like treasure, but the tree was very grumpy. No one had ever been allowed to pick its lemons—not the birds, not the squirrels, not even the kind old hedgehog who once offered to trim its branches. 'They’re MINE!' the tree would bark, shaking its branches with each angry sigh.

One morning, a clever red fox padded through the forest, her tail flicking with curiosity. She smelled the tangy scent of lemons and paused beneath the tree. 'Good morning, Lemon Tree,' she said, her voice as soft as a breeze. 'May I have a lemon?' The tree cackled. 'Not a chance! My lemons are too special for you!' The fox tilted her head and said, 'Then tell me, oh mighty tree, what makes your lemons so special?' The tree huffed. 'They are golden, of course! The most golden lemons in the forest. And no one else has them.'

The fox smiled. 'Then let me prove to you that your lemons are not the only golden things in the forest.' She wove through the trees and returned with a basket of shiny coins. 'These are the golden coins I’ve collected from the riverbank. I give them to the poor and the hungry. But I’ve never had a lemon. Would you like me to give you some coins in return for one of your golden lemons?' The tree blinked. 'Coins? For a lemon? That’s not fair!' The fox nodded. 'Then let’s test it. Let me have one of your lemons, and I’ll give you one of my coins. If you like it, we can trade more.'

The tree grumbled but gave her one golden lemon. The fox bit into it and gasped. 'This is the sweetest lemon I’ve ever tasted! I’ll trade you ten coins for ten lemons.' The tree’s eyes widened. 'Ten coins for ten lemons? That’s more than I’ve ever seen!' The fox winked. 'Then let’s trade.' The tree, now happy and full of coins, gave her ten lemons. The fox left with a basket full, and the tree, now smiling, began to share its fruit with all who came by.

The forest creatures were delighted. The birds sang, the squirrels chattered, and the hedgehog trimmed the tree’s branches with care. The tree no longer grumbled, and the fox became known as the friendliest fox in the forest. Every morning, she would bring the tree a few more coins, and in return, the tree would give her a lemon to share with the world.

One day, the tree said, 'Fox, you’ve taught me that sharing is better than hoarding. I’ve never been so happy.' The fox smiled. 'And I’ve learned that kindness is the sweetest thing of all.'

From that day on, the Lemon Tree and the Fox became the best of friends, and the forest was a happier place because of them.
