Stories for Infants: The Moon's Lullaby

One quiet evening, as the sun dipped behind the hills and the sky turned to velvet blue, the Moon noticed something strange. The stars, her dear friends, had stopped shining. Not one of them twinkled or blinked. The Moon floated high in the sky, worried and lonely, for without the stars, the world would not know when to sleep. ‘What if the children cannot fall asleep tonight?’ she whispered to the wind. ‘What if the dreams never come?’

Down below, in a cozy burrow under a soft daisy, lived a little mouse named Milo. Milo loved the night, for it was full of wonders: the rustle of leaves, the hoot of an owl, and the soft glow of the Moon. But that night, something felt different. The stars were silent, and the world was too quiet. ‘Is it the Moon who is sad?’ Milo wondered, peeking out of his burrow. He had heard the Moon sing many nights before, her voice like a silver lullaby that made the world drift into dreams.

Milo decided to climb up the hill, with a tiny lantern made of a pear shell and a glowing mushroom. He found the Moon, who looked as if she had been crying. ‘Why are the stars not singing tonight?’ Milo asked, his voice as soft as a whisper. The Moon sighed. ‘They have forgotten the song that lulls the world to sleep. Without it, the children will not dream, and the night will be lost.’

Milo tilted his head, thinking. ‘Then we must find the song together.’ So he climbed onto the Moon’s cradle of clouds, and together they began to search. They flew over the hills, through the trees, and into the heart of the forest, where the stars had hidden. One by one, the stars emerged, shy and confused. ‘We’ve forgotten the song,’ they said in unison. ‘We do not know how to sing.’

Milo smiled gently. ‘Then we shall teach you. I have heard the Moon’s lullaby many times. Let me sing it for you.’ And so, Milo began to sing, his voice tiny but full of love. The Moon joined in, her voice like a silver river. And slowly, the stars began to hum along, their light growing brighter with every note. The song was magic, and as it filled the sky, the world below began to drift into sleep.

The children in their beds, the animals in their nests, and even the flowers in their gardens closed their eyes, lulled by the Moon’s lullaby. The night was safe again, and the stars remembered their song. Milo and the Moon watched as the world dreamed, peaceful and content. ‘You have done a great thing,’ the Moon said to Milo. ‘You have reminded us all that even the smallest heart can light up the darkest night.’

From that night on, the stars never forgot their song. And every evening, when the world is ready to sleep, the Moon sings her lullaby, with the help of Milo, the little mouse who remembered the power of love and music.
