The Class Pet's Big Escape

One morning, Mrs. Alvarez gasped. "Peanut's cage door is open!" Peanut the class hamster was gone. The whole kindergarten class gathered around, eyes wide.

"Let's look quietly, so we don't scare her," said Mrs. Alvarez. The children spread out around the room, tiptoeing and whispering instead of shouting.

Lily checked behind the bookshelf. Sam checked under the reading rug. Nothing. Then little Theo noticed a tiny rustle coming from the classroom's play kitchen.

He peeked inside the toy oven, and there was Peanut, curled up cozy and asleep next to a plastic pretend cupcake. "I found her!" Theo whispered excitedly, and the whole class tiptoed over to see.

Mrs. Alvarez scooped Peanut up gently and placed her back in her cage, making sure the latch clicked shut tight this time. "Great teamwork, everyone," she said. The class cheered — quietly, so Peanut could keep napping.

At lunch, the class decided Peanut needed a job to keep her from wandering off again. Lily suggested a new job chart, with a different helper checking the cage latch every single morning. Theo, who had found her, got to go first, and he checked it so carefully that everyone laughed.

Mrs. Alvarez pinned the new job chart right next to Peanut's cage, with a little hamster sticker for every name. Each morning after that, whoever's turn it was checked the latch twice, just to be sure, before school even started.

From that day on, Peanut's cage door stayed shut tight, and the class never had another big escape to solve — though they still talked about the toy oven for weeks afterward, and Theo got to tell the story every single time a new student joined the class.

A few weeks later, a new student named Ana joined the class, and on her very first day, Theo proudly showed her the job chart and told her the whole story of Peanut's great escape from the beginning. Ana listened wide-eyed, and by the end of the week, she had earned her very first turn checking the latch — carefully, just like Theo had taught her, with the whole class watching to make sure she got it exactly right.
