The Devil's Cave of Potosí

In the heart of the Imperial City of Potosí, where mountains rise proudly and the air is cold and crystal clear, there is a mysterious cave known as the Devil's Cave. The locals tell a chilling legend about this cave, a story passed down from generation to generation.

According to the legend, long ago, the Devil himself flew over Potosí on a stormy night. His black horse ran at full speed, its hooves echoing like thunder in the darkness. But the Devil was a wicked and proud creature, and in his arrogance, he crashed into a sharp rock. The impact was so strong that it left a dark stain on the rock, a mark still visible today.

After the accident, the Devil fled to the cave, wounded and furious. From that day on, the cave became a place of darkness and danger. It was said that at certain times of the day, the Devil would emerge from the cave as a rider, galloping through the city at dizzying speeds. Anyone who crossed his path was trampled without mercy.

The people of Potosí lived in fear. They dared not approach the cave, fearing for their lives. But one day, a brave priest named San Bartolomé decided to face the Devil. He entered the cave, armed only with a cross and his faith.

Inside the cave, San Bartolomé found the Devil, a horrible and wicked creature. But the priest was not intimidated. He raised the cross and commanded the Devil to leave the cave. The Devil resisted, but the power of the cross was too strong. With a roar of anger, the Devil disappeared into the depths of the cave.

From that day on, the Devil's Cave was no longer a place of fear. San Bartolomé had defeated the Devil and had freed Potosí from its curse. To commemorate this event, the people of Potosí built a chapel at the entrance of the cave and placed a statue of San Bartolomé inside. Every year, they celebrate the feast of San Bartolomé with great joy, remembering the day the Devil was defeated and the city was saved.
