In the silver-rimmed kingdom of Aethelgard, where the mountains whispered secrets to the clouds, lived a princess named Snow White. At fourteen, she possessed a spirit as vibrant as the spring thaw, with hair the color of midnight obsidian and skin as pale as the first winter frost. She often wore a royal blue bodice embroidered with gold filigree and a flowing yellow skirt that danced around her ankles. But the castle’s beauty was overshadowed by the vanity of Queen Elara, Snow White’s stepmother. Elara was a woman of sharp, icy elegance, with emerald eyes that saw only flaws and a heart hardened by the pursuit of eternal perfection. Each morning, Elara would consult her Mirror of Truth—a swirling vortex of silver mist trapped in a frame of jagged obsidian.
‘Mirror, Mirror, reflecting the soul, who holds the power to make the world whole?’ the Queen would hiss. For years, the mirror replied with her own name. But as Snow White grew, her kindness began to radiate a light that no magic could mimic. One morning, the mirror’s voice crackled like breaking ice: ‘Your beauty is a mask of stone, but the girl of the forest shall claim the throne. Her heart is pure, her spirit bright; the fairest of all is Snow White.’

Consumed by a jealousy that burned colder than fire, the Queen ordered her royal huntsman to lead the princess into the Whispering Woods and ensure she never returned. However, the huntsman, moved by Snow White’s gentle nature, could not strike. ‘Run!’ he whispered, his voice trembling. ‘Hide where the shadows are deep, for the Queen’s eyes are everywhere.’
Snow White fled into the emerald depths of the ancient forest. The trees seemed to reach out with gnarled fingers, and the wind carried the low growls of unseen creatures. Just as exhaustion threatened to pull her under, she stumbled upon a clearing. There sat a cottage that looked as though it had grown directly from the earth, its roof thatched with living moss and its windows glowing with a warm, amber light. Inside, everything was scaled for smaller inhabitants, yet crafted with the precision of master architects. This was the home of the Seven Guardians—ancient protectors of the earth’s minerals who had long since retreated from the world of men.

When the Guardians returned from the deep crystal veins of the mountains, they found Snow White sleeping. They weren't the bumbling figures of nursery rhymes; they were wise, weathered beings with eyes that held the sparkle of gemstones. After hearing her tale, the eldest, a dwarf with a beard like spun silver, spoke. ‘The Queen seeks to possess beauty, but beauty is a gift to be shared, not a treasure to be hoarded. Stay with us, child of Aethelgard.’
Months passed, and Snow White learned the language of the forest. She discovered that true strength wasn't found in a crown, but in the resilience of the roots and the harmony of the woods. Yet, back in the castle, the Mirror of Truth whispered again, revealing Snow White’s survival. Queen Elara, skilled in the dark arts of alchemy, brewed a concoction of pure apathy and disguised it within the skin of a resplendent, crimson apple. Transforming herself into a haggard wanderer with tattered gray robes, she trekked to the cottage.
‘A gift for the girl who has nothing,’ the disguised Queen croaked, thrusting the shimmering fruit through the window. Snow White, seeing only an old woman in need, took a bite. The world turned to gray. The vibrant colors of the forest bled away as she fell into a deep, enchanted sleep—a stasis of the soul. The Guardians, returning to find their friend lifeless, could not bring themselves to bury her. Instead, they crafted a sarcophagus of pure diamond and placed it atop the Hill of Echoes, where the sun’s first light would always find her.
Word of the 'Sleeping Star' spread across the lands, eventually reaching Prince Alaric, a scholar who sought wisdom over conquest. When he saw Snow White, he didn't see a prize to be won, but a story left unfinished. He realized that the Queen’s curse was one of isolation. As he spoke of the kingdom’s need for her light, and the Guardians joined their voices in a chorus of ancient earth-magic, the spell shattered. It wasn't just a kiss of romance, but a reclamation of life. Snow White awoke, her eyes brighter than before, for she now knew the depths of both shadow and light. Queen Elara, consumed by her own reflection in the Mirror of Truth, vanished into a puff of cold smoke, leaving Aethelgard to be ruled by a Queen who knew that the fairest heart is the one that beats for others.
