In the sun-drenched valley of Arboleas, where the olive trees whisper secrets to the Almería breeze, the morning of October 31st arrived with a peculiar chill. The local primary school, usually a place of quiet study and rhythmic Spanish verbs, was transformed. Orange streamers hung from the white-washed arches, and paper bats fluttered near the tall windows. This was no ordinary day; it was the day of the Great Halloween Festival.
Leo, a seven-year-old boy with messy brown hair and tan skin, arrived at the school gates feeling like a true sorcerer. He adjusted his long blue wizard robe, which was embroidered with silver stars that caught the morning light. He wasn't alone for long. Soon, a flash of bright purple appeared. It was Mia, his best friend. Mia was seven years old, with long red braids that bounced against her shoulders and fair skin dotted with a constellation of freckles. She wore a tall, pointed purple witch hat and a matching dress that shimmered as she walked.
'Leo! Have you seen the gym yet?' Mia asked, her eyes wide with excitement. 'The teachers have been working all night!'
Before Leo could answer, a loud 'Roar!' echoed through the courtyard. Sam, the third member of their group, stomped toward them. Sam was eight years old, with short black curly hair and dark skin. He was encased in a magnificent green dinosaur costume, complete with a long tail that wagged whenever he moved. 'The dinosaur wizard-witch team is officially here!' Sam announced, his grin bright against his dark complexion.
The trio headed toward the school gymnasium, where the annual pumpkin carving contest was the main event. Students from all over Arboleas had brought their best creations. There were pumpkins shaped like cats, pumpkins with scary faces, and even a pumpkin carved to look like the old castle on the hill. But as they pushed open the heavy double doors, they didn't hear cheering. Instead, they heard a chorus of worried gasps.
'It’s gone!' cried Sra. Garcia, the art teacher. 'The Grand Prize Pumpkin has vanished!'

The center of the room featured a high velvet-covered pedestal, but it was empty. The Grand Prize Pumpkin, a massive gourd the size of a tractor tire that the students had spent weeks decorating, was nowhere to be seen.
'This looks like a job for the Arboleas Detectives,' Leo said, tapping his chin thoughtfully.
They began their investigation in the courtyard. The ground was dusty, as it often was in Almería, but Mia’s sharp eyes spotted something. 'Look! Orange smudges!' she pointed out. On the white tiles of the hallway leading away from the gym, there were faint, sticky orange streaks and a trail of tiny, white pumpkin seeds.
'They lead to the library,' Sam whispered, his dinosaur tail twitching with a mix of fear and curiosity.
The school library was a sanctuary of old books and wooden desks. On Halloween, it felt especially mysterious, with shadows stretching long across the floor. As the three friends crept inside, they heard a strange, rhythmic 'thump-thump-thump' coming from the back of the room, behind the tall shelves of history books.
Leo gripped his blue wizard wand, Mia adjusted her purple hat, and Sam stood tall in his green scales. They rounded the corner and stopped in their tracks. It wasn't a ghost or a monster. It was the school’s friendly janitor, Mr. Paco, and the librarian, Ms. Elena. They were huddled around the Grand Prize Pumpkin, which was sitting on a low table.

'Oh! You found us,' Ms. Elena said, looking up with a sheepish smile.
'Why did you take it?' Mia asked, her red braids swaying as she tilted her head.
Mr. Paco pointed to the bottom of the giant pumpkin. 'We noticed a tiny family of field mice had made a nest inside the hollow base last night. If we had left it in the noisy gym with all the stomping and music, the poor babies would have been terrified. We moved it here to the quietest room in the school to keep them safe until we can move the nest back to the garden.'
Leo, Mia, and Sam looked closer. Sure enough, three tiny, fuzzy mice were curled up in a bed of dry grass inside the carved base of the pumpkin. The children realized that the 'theft' was actually an act of kindness.
'Can we help?' Sam asked.
Together, the children and the adults carefully helped move the pumpkin to a safe, decorated spot in the garden where the mice could be returned to the bushes later. The festival continued with even more joy than before. As the sun set over the Arboleas hills, painting the sky in shades of violet and gold, the school courtyard filled with the smell of roasting chestnuts and the sound of laughter.
Leo, Mia, and Sam sat together under a string of glowing lanterns. They had solved the mystery, saved a family of mice, and celebrated the best Halloween Arboleas had ever seen. The stars began to twinkle, matching the silver shapes on Leo’s blue robe, as the music played late into the Spanish night.
